AI6 Top 11 Review:
Ryan's intro was short and sweet so I'll copy him and make sure mine is the same. He let's us know that we're watching American Idol, he introduces the Top 11 and then he introduces the judges after that the tape rolls and it is announced that the British are indeed coming, it's British Invasion night. Then we get the obligatory "OmFG hOw gReat Are LulU and PetEr Noone!!1" clip and the show begins.
Haley Scarnato started off the show with "Tell Him." She's definitely smart, she knows what to wear, what to sing and how to sing it to get attention at the very least. She sang very nicely I thought and really had fun with it. She showed off more of the personality people are beginning to love and connected with her audience. I loved it and I have to commend her for really showing that she belongs in this competition. Randy thought it was the perfect song for her and that it had yo factor all over it. Paula echoed Randy's comment about the song and said she showed a great flirtatious side. Simon said she was naughty and that it was fun and young but that it was a bit shrieky and said that people would be talking about more than her performance.
After that Chris Richardson tried to show another side of himself with "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." I thought it showed off his voice well but was a bit too nasal for me. It was rather boring also and I don't think he had enough fun with it or did anything really special. Randy said it was another great performance from him and that it was his best vocal yet. Paula said he makes smart song choices, that the arrangement was good and that it was sexy. Simon said it was his best performance.
Next up Stephanie Edwards chose to be predictable and sang "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me." I'm quite glad I don't have to say I love her because I don't. It was really just an okay vocal and it was very uninteresting. I was bored and very distracted by her outfit. I really want to know why anyone would wear a blue garbage bag and a pair of hooker boots. Randy said it was a little pitchy and wasn't her best performance. Paula said it was the right song but some notes were off. Simon asked how she thought she did, and said she's losing her edge.
Blake Lewis was on stage next with a remixed version of "Time of the Season." Personally I wish he'd just leave the damn songs alone for once. I don't need to hear a new version of an old song every week. One time I'd like to hear him just sing a song. He didn't sit it well for me and it really sounded the same as last week. I didn't like it at all. Randy said he's a huge Blake fan and that it was very current. Paula loved it. Simon said it was a million times better than last week. I'd really like to get some of whatever the judges are on.
LaKisha Jones was torn between two songs but eventually settled on "Diamonds Are Forever" against LuLu's advice. I still felt the performance was boring. There were a few not so powerful parts but other than that no real complaints. To be honest I might be indifferent on this particular performance, I didn't care either way. Randy thought it was a good choice but that it was just alright. Paula said it was the right song and was very smart, then she blathered on about diamonds. Simon said it was like her in 50 years and wasn't his favourite performance.
Next up was Phil Stacey singing "Tobacco Road" and looking as creepy as ever. I thought it started off well but really fell apart when he hit the chorus. Some moments he showed potential and others he failed miserable. The dance moves were horrid though and that threw me over the edge. Very mediocre overall. Randy said he had a good time but there were pitchy spots. Paula said it was a real good song choice but there were pitchy parts. Simon wasn't crazy about it wans called it 3rd division bar performance like with no grit.
After that mess Jordin Sparks sang "I Who Have Nothing," a big song to show off her voice. She sang it wonderfully and really proved that she is a serious contender. It was captivating and just amazing. Randy said it was a very tall order for her and that it was very controlled and one of the best tonight. Paula said she showed her great range. Simon said she sang it beautifully but it made him want to jump off a bridge.
Sanjaya Malakar was up next singing "You Really Got Me" and I think barfing should have been added to the end of that title. It was the worst vocal from him just when I didn't think he could get worse. It was ********ty karaoke at best and it was just creepy. Randy said he shocked him and came out of his shell. Paula said that's what she's been waiting for. Simon said that the crying little girl in the audience's face said it all.
Gina Glocksen dressed in all black sang "Paint it Black," if you can really call what she did singing. It was shouty from start to finish. It was almost unbearable during certain parts. I'd rather sit in a dark closet and listen to myself breathe than ever have to hear something that atrocious again. Absolute piss. Randy said that she's the resident rocker and that he loves her edge but that it was just alright. Paula said it was miles better than last week which I find very sad. Simon said moments of it were like complete torture and I'd have to agree with him.
Next to last was Chris Sligh singing "She's Not There." It's really ashame that she wasn't there because she missed a great performance, whoever she is. He's back to being Chris and I loved it. He sang well, he connected with the audience on a new level and it was great. Randy thought it was fun like a concert but that it was a little rough at the beginning. Paula said he was a little ahead of the pocket but that she liked the clothes. Simon also liked it from what I gathered of his disputing with Paula.
Closing the show was Melinda Doolittle with "As Long As He Needs Me" and they definitely saved the best for last. She started off slow but really brought the entertainment and amazement toward the middle. She has an amazing voice and she proved it once again. She has yet to be off and she's just phenomenal. Another job more than well done. Randy said they saved the best for last. Paula said she's in her own league. Simon asked if she's really as nice as she seems and said it started boring but the 2nd part was sensational.
Overall Melinda, Chris S and Jordin brought it, they were by far the best. The ones who also brought it were Sanjaya, Phil and Gina but they brought the torture and hopefully they'll be the bottom 3 tomorrow night.
