flash floods

:D

Everyone was stuck at home today because of the flood. Yes, the FLOOD. It's summer, but typhoon Cosme obviously couldn't wait one more month for the start of the rainy season.

I don't really mind, though. We live pretty close to the river, so floods happen at least once a year and we (our neighbors and the people in the neighboring subdivisions) have gotten used to it. The floods usually aren't serious (serious floods are whoooole different thing), and this particular one is the first one in years to actually last longer than a day.

I remember we only ever had one really serious flood - and that was back when I was a wee 7/8 year old. That one got into our house, so for a week or so we were stranded in the 2nd floor of our house. Our stove, microwave, etc. were piled on the stairs - and there wasn't any electricity for a few days. It was pretty fun, though.

I thought having a "swimming pool" inside our house (one whole floor, in fact) was the BEST THING EVER (keep in mind, I was 7/8). And it basically was. XD What was even better was going out of the gate and playing in the flooded streets. :D The water was cleaner back then - no leptospirosis threats yet. :P I mean, we even got to catch fish - how is that NOT the best thing ever? I even saw some of our neighbors relaxing on top of their roofs. >_< I even remember getting angry about not being able to watch the Spice Girls concert on HBO because of the power outage. Spice Girls are srs bzness. 8D

And one time after a flood, we found a turtle wandering around outside. So we brought it in and made it our pet and fed it kangkong. :) But, we eventually let it out into the wild.

One thing I'll always love doing is wading around in the water (when the water level's gone down a bit) in rain boots, going into the deep(er) parts and letting a little bit of the water in the boots. 8D

Yesterday's flood happened pretty suddenly, though. It's been raining pretty hard the past few days, but I never expected it to flood. I was taking a bath, and the next thing I know I'm texting Manong Mike, asking him where he is and telling him he might not be able to make it back (Alex used the pick-up to pick up [-__-] him and my mom).

flood gates - I think we got them after one flood got into our garage and garden (but not into the house itself)

I guess the floods are one of the many things I miss about home when I'm in Manila (as weird as that sounds). The rain, the wind, looking out the window to check the water level, setting up the flood gates, wading in the water, and watching the water level recede. :}
