I remember watching an episode of Sabrina The Teenage Witch once and thinking one of the ideas they had was quite spiffy. You see there was an empty white room that was supposed to be one of the most fun places in the world. In this room anything could happen. It was a place to release your creative energies, show people who you truly were and effectively stamp your personality on it.
What you do in such a room, with a blank canvas just waiting to be filled with your personality?
Myself things would start subtly. A lonely church bell would echo mournfully through the room. The faint sound of a lonely violin and the haunting sound of a females voice would slowly fill the empty space.
The ceiling would fade away to reveal the night’s sky, iridescent with glowing stars and a full lustrous moon. The room would become a wide outdoor courtyard, not a pokey narrow one, but spacious, filled with beautiful plants, flowers and alcoves in which you could loose yourself.
A masquerade ball would be in full sway where the men would ware long 17th or 18th century coats and the ladies would have long flowing gothic dresses.
And as we dance through the night, the sound of the wolf would be heard just over the horizon carried on a light wind.
There are many influences for this vision.
My love of the theatre. As I mentioned in a previous post going to the Minack theatre and watching Shakespeare, as the day fades into the dark of night and the waves crash against the rocks below, is an amazing experience.
Classical novels and films. I enjoyed the BBC's adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, with their huge balls, filled with music and dancing. In Little Women the scene where Jo sneaks off at the ball and dances with Laurie just seems like so much fun, I would love to do something similar myself.
Classical / New Age / Gothic music. I love the haunting sound of female vocals, as they echo and waver through the air. Sometimes accompanied by instruments, such as the violin, that blend together to form an eerie melody, that sends shivers and tingles through your body. Loreena McKennitt and Enya are just two examples of this.
And of course my love of fantasy such as The Lord of The Ring and the role-playing game Ravenloft.
Where am I going with all this? No idea really, I just felt like writing, putting down my thoughts, rather than sleeping when I should.
So please, if you will, share a little bit of yourself this dark night. How would you fill your canvas?
