The greatest absurdity of our times is thinking that, united together, people of a spiritually inferior character are able to bring happiness to the rest of humanity. Again, men thinking to save others. But in roder to save others, it's necessary to first save onself. It's necessary to possess spiritual strength. Without it, that which aims to help transforms into imposition, into violence. If every man was able to save himself, there wouldn't be any need to save others. We love to give advice, to instruct, while, as far as we ourselves are concerned, we overlook our greatest sins.

- Andrei Tarkovsky, Interview with Le Monde, 12 May 1983.
