Week 1 of 2

Aug 23, 2008 23:38

So I'm here in Sydney for a 2 week try-out, the first week just over. Another week to go. All would be good, except for my try-out, I'm working on stuff that is unrelated to the full-time position I applied for, so I'm not sure how this try-out works. As they say, it's a foot in, but where the foot leads remains to be seen.

I'm glad to be doing something. Stacked with 5 concurrent jobs, the week flew by quickly. A lot of meetings. Big companies means more bureaucracy, even a company that sells creativity cannot escape it. Every concept requires 4 levels of review before we get down to production. It's a bit of a pain because everyone has an opinion and you don't quite know who the hell everyone is or why they should even have an opinion.

But from the little I've heard, we're (the English art director I'm teamed with) doing better than the previous team. I just can't help fretting.

It's just like a relationship. You reach a certain (old) age when you either know what you want, or you're set in your ways, and you don't want to settle. I know what I want and I think I know where I'm going or how to get there. I can't afford to waste time with detours now.

Again, fingers crossed. But again, also ... I shouldn't jinx anything, this is the best thing to happen to me in 3 months. I know I don't sound terribly excited.

Crashing with Kevin who was conveniently sent up to Sydney for 3 months. So accommodation here is sorted, even if I do stay on after next week, I will have some luxury of time to find a place of my own. If Kevin gets a permanent transfer to Sydney, we might even share a place. We seem to be doing quite well as enforced roommates. He's an outgoing guy and talkative, I'm quite the opposite but because it's just the two of us, I have to step out of my shell and try to be more interactive.

We're staying at Quest on Dixon which sucks ass. The first room we had was great except the internet died on us all of a sudden. The manager was kind enough to give us an exchange, and helped move our shit over while we were at work. (Except for some inexplicable reason, they threw out our bread, eggs, and instant noodles, and I left behind my phone charger which I hope can be reclaimed.)

Except this new room, has everything except a fucking sofa bed, and laundry. I never knew a Queen-sized bed can be split in two: There's a zip joining the two halves which we discovered last night, so we each slept on one separated half last night. That's sorted.

Except I've been going up and down between our floor and the next the whole night trying to sort out my laundry because I didn't know how long the machine took to wash the clothes, I had to separate some of them from the bulk which was spun dry ... I think I pressed the wrong button and fuzzed the machine's fuzzy logic so it went through the rinse cycle twice. It's finally in the dryer. But I forgot to check when it went in so I'm not quite sure when to check on it. Or if the laundry is even dry.

Bought the VX Revolution today. It's a dream to use after the Not-Mighty Mouse. The cordless is responsive, the spin wheel works beautifully (it has two modes: one which is normal, and the other which works as a fly wheel so you only have to flick it and the wheel scrolls down the entire page), the body has a nice weight to it so when you move the mouse, it glides with a smooth momentum. I'm fucking impressed. Everyone should get one. It's one of those things that just works, like most Apple products.

Luke Fair coming on at 1 a.m. tonight. I'm debating whether to walk over to the Chinese Laundry to catch him just for the hell of it. I'm not a big fan, it's just something to do.
