today i was teaching one of my various swim classes at the ymca
i told one small boy, maybe 6-7 years old, to swim freestyle to the other side and stop, and i followed him.
i told him good job and that he could swim back to the other side.
i started walking to the other side and he said "wait i have to tell you something"
i walked back over to him and listened.
he said that everyday his mom writes him a note in his lunch
and today it said "happy halloween, love mummy"
i asked him if she wrote it on a napkin and he said yes.
he thought it was funny how she wrote "mummy" instead of "mommy"
i dont know why this effected me so much
maybe because he felt it was important enough to tell me about it, someone he barely knows
maybe because i remembered how when youre a kid small things like that mattered and how nice that was
maybe because i thought it was nice that his mom cared enough about him to write a note everyday and to actually put thought into it.
i do know that this was the only thing that made me genuinely happy today
