and now an interlude

here are some thoughts from my cousin Paul, the first which he said a few days ago and the second an excerpt from a paper he wrote.

"it is un-American to trust government"

from a Hist 202 paper entitled "Belloc and the Historical Apologetic" (19 April 06):

"Whether or not one agrees with the Church does not alter the fact that the history of Europe is defined by either support of or opposition to this faith. This is the historical fact which the apologist may not neglect; it is not dependent on the truth of the claims of the Roman Church. If this faith has defined conflict for two thousand years, however, one implication is that one should perhaps pay heed to the claims of the institution that is the focal point of contention."

the last part reminds me of something that happened while in the Line O' Doom at the second DMV place. my dad was wearing his "I believe - 2000 years of Catholic tradition" shirt with the list of popes on the back from St. Peter to John Paul II, and some guy behind us started snarking to his buddy about Catholics. He was hideously uneducated in basic history and I was refuting him in my head because I was so bored, but it was a sharp disappointment because previously I had been enjoying eavesdropping on his fantastic knowledge of fly fishing.
