I'm going to give LJ another try, as it is not very fulfilling to do nothing but work all day!
LJ is also a wonderful way to connect to people and is also a great source of fandom stuff that I've neglected, but would like to rediscover!

Anyway, a question that's been on my mind a lot lately is: "to what extent is it okay to watch a show with serious social issues if it represents a certain amount of progress?"

I've been watching "Modern Family", which is a comedy about (surprise?) a modern family. One of the main reasons why I love the show is that it's the first show I've seen where the creators are willing to portray a family with same-sex parents. I think that showing gay couples with kids is an important step forward, given that most comedies only have a token gay character whose sexual orientation is a source of humor.

On the other hand, the gay couple is, in many ways, very stereotypical. One of the guys actually swings his hips when he walks, and does the stereotypical hand-sweeping motion, so I'm torn, very torn! The show seems to represent progress, but perpetuates stereotypes (which some people might perceive as negative) at the same time.
