Hello! I am back home from the madness that was Camp Sparkle. Well, actually I was back home yesterday, but then I had to sleep and I had to sleep some more and then I had to work and then I had to cook dinner and empty Pixy Stix wrappers out of my pockets so I could do washing and watch Life On Mars and oh, life is so hard when you're not at a weekend getaway for popslashers.
Firstly,
this is what we did. Be very scared.
After some mad emailing on Thursday night
trumpeterofdoom and I worked out how to meet up on the train at Leeds, and after exchanging photographs, detailed descriptions of what we were wearing, and agreeing that I should carry bananas, the only way we could have missed each other is if we had both been struck down by a sudden case of amnesia and/or blindness. Luckily, we weren't, and we spent the train journey down probably freaking out anybody within earshot. Which is as it should be.
When we got to Ludlow the wonderful
simply_fly_away collected us and took us to the most awesome house in the history of ever, where many of the party were already there and the rest arrived a little later.
pensnest made us play a getting to know each other game with an imaginary red ball, because she is evil. But it worked! We all learnt
seiyaharris's name!
-- I am trying to write up what happened and realising that really I have not much idea of the timeline of the weekend, probably due to far too much sugar and caffeine and far too little sleep. (But sharing a room with
trumpeterofdoom really does ensure you learn lots of new things about AJ McLean). So, in no particular order:
* I met
bubbleforest who wrote my SeSa story this year and is lovely. ♥
* We watched some NSYNC footage that
nopseud had brought that most of us had never seen before. I have no idea how she managed that, but it was the most fantastic start to the footage-watching. It was hilarious.
* We ate some Pixy Stix. It was NASTY. Like sugar that has been rolling around in a chemistry set.
* I tried to explain just why Kevin Richardson is Not To Be Trusted. (It is to do with the fact that he is planning various methods to kill us all in our sleep).
* We had a massive swag swap. I now have a
pensnest Justin mug to drink my coffee out of, and a NSYNC magnet on my fridge, and a poster of Justin and Nelly where Justin's going, "HEY LOOK! IT'S NELLY! HE'S MY FRIEND! THAT MEANS I AM COOL!"
* We ate some more Pixy Stix. The purple ones are the most foul.
* We watched some Backstreet footage and learnt that Nick Carter Is Even Dumber Than We Thought. But he is pretty.
* About six or seven of the Brits piled into a little upstairs room to watch the Dancing On Ice final. We had to! The power of Torville and Dean compelled us!
* We watched Reel NSYNC and did themed Pixy Stix shots. I learnt I almost like the blue ones.
* We watched The Making of Pop, and Making The Tour, and some more Backstreet stuff, and did alot ("") more shrieking and laughing.
* We wrote a story (see above). Using five words each does not make for a very coherent story, particularly if the participants don't do any conferring about where the story is headed. But I think we should all be proud. It is a magnificent story. Even if people (
seiyaharris) kept writing sentences with Kevin in them and passing the book to me.
* I got some Pixy Stix up my nose. It was entirely accidental, and in no way indicative of anything.
* We talked about Popslash set in Europe and the cliché of it always snowing. It is not always snowing in Europe! It doesn't snow very much at all!
* It snowed.
* People got in the hot tub in the snow, because they were HARDCORE. I wasn't one of these people, because I am not hardcore.
* We watched Harry and Max: The Cartercest Movie, which was a bit like playing that game when you're little where you put your hand on the ice and see who can keep it on for longest. I managed about an hour, I think. It felt like DAYS. OF WRONG. Oh my GOD.
* We ate DEATHCAKE. for breakfast. and listened to THE best song I have ever heard, which is by the Backstreet Boys and consists of them talking about what sort of girl they would like and how they would woo her. Talking. It was the distilled aural essence of awesome and I must have it. Anyone?
rikes?
* There was no more Pixy Stix. I was sad.
* We talked about the differences of general attitudes to religion in the US vs Europe (
ninjetti75 was our USian representative) and the difficulties of touching on religion in popslash when you are not religious and your characters are. It was actually very interesting, but then I realised there were mechanical bulls on the TV in the living room and I had to go watch PopOd. I had to!
* We watched some footage of McFly taking each others' clothes off. I think there might have been more to it than that, but who knows.
simply_fly_away explained to us the True Love of Aaron Carter and the Dougie McFly. It made perfect sense.
*
trumpeterofdoom explained to us the True Love of AJ McLean and JC Chasez and sometimes Robbie Williams. It involved shoes and also made perfect sense.
* We watched more footage and screamed every time JC and Lance shared Meaningful Glances. There was a lot of screaming.
* We "awww"ed at Brian. There may have been some "bless!".
* We talked about the attitude differences between the US and Europe regarding Boys Taking Their Clothes Off In Front Of Each Other (
ninjetti75 was again the US ambassador). It was agreed we were Generally In Favour.
*
saba1789 tried to give me Kevin Richardson-themed nightmares. I am unable to hate her for it, though, because she wrote possibly my favourite line in The Story. ("But also quite turned on.") It's all in the timing.
* We realised we didn't have much time left and ought to start finishing the story. Suddenly the sentences got a lot shorter and much more final. But no less bizarre.
* We hugged. There was lots of hugging, because we had to say goodbye. It was tragical.
pensnest and
nopseud, thank you so much for organising the whole thing. It was. What was it? Oh yes. It was AWESOME.
