Creation is waiting for freedom

What was the highlight of today? I'm not sure I know. How can it be that a low-light is a highlight?

I was walking with Audrey to Parkside to catch her bus. We had gotten off skype with a friend we both love, mostly about a very trying situation. Then, approaching Parker's piece, we saw a rainbow. We got to the field itself and we saw the full arches of two rainbows in their full glory against a purple sky. Seeing the rainbow made me feel hope. It brought about a strange sort of joy.

Reading Genesis 9, I realised the rainbow was meant to be a reminder to God, a sign of His promise never to flood the earth again like He did in Noah's time. But it was a reminder to me of what exactly God is doing every moment: forbearing. It brought me such hope that God is waiting. He's waiting. The God who made the world is watching the people that He made as they spoil His world, break other people, use other people, hate other people, trample on other people. He feels the grief of every broken heart, every broken relationship, every oppressed will, every unfed stomach. But because He promised Noah, He is forbearing. Imagine how much patience it must take for a righteous God to keep Himself from righting the wrongs that He has to endure looking upon very single moment. Thank God He is. Because if His patience were to run out, it would be terror. The core of all that's unsightly to Him is in you and me: it's the little things like selfishness, callousness, unforgiveness, pride, hatred, hard-heartedness - just sometimes amplified, or unleashed. He would have to wipe out everyone. Everything.

But He's waiting. There is still time. He's forbearing, this very moment. There is still time for them to come hide behind the shield of the cross. Hope, I felt hope.

He is coming. One day He will right every wrong and wipe away every tear. Not yet. But soon, very soon. But He's waited one more day. Hallelujah.
