The Stroudsburg girls basketball team has started out a fresh season, with even more fresh and new idea's. They are inverting older plays with new and interesting changes to spruce them up and confuse the competition. Lead by Coach Kim Ryan, the girls have begun to grow and do a lot of learning this season. "We try to work on a lot of basketball knowledge during practice, to get the girls heads moving so they can make smart decisions, and transfer those idea's into the games." said coach Ryan.
The girls are suffering from a huge height disadvantage compared to other teams that they are up against this year. To make up for this lack in inches, the girls are sprinting hard and developing a great defense as well as a quick and smart witted offense. To help assure that they will often have possession of the ball, the girls must work dillegently to seal off their opponents and box them out with every shot taken. "Boxing out is extremely important in this sport, coach always makes it a point to emphasize this in practice," said sophomore Kasey Fraser. "If we don't box out, we run." With the threat of tedious sprints hanging over their heads, the girls really rush to the ball and bennefit in the end.
Despite some of the hardships the girls must face this season, they also have a lot of help, and a big coaching staff. In addition to Coach Ryan, Dave Rounsaville, Hannah Ward, and Clarance Cramer all dedicate their time to teach the girls some of their knowledge when it comes to the sport. "I am thankful to have so many cool coaches, they all teach me different and unique things to improve my game." said senior Maxx Lockely. The confidence of having such a positive coaching staff really helps the girls to create a solid approach to playing basketball.
Any player that you ask on the lady mounties basketball team will tell you that communication and unity are two key components to winning games. "If we don't communicate and just get mad at eachother, it brings the whole team morale down. Nobody wants to be out on the court at that point." said senior Christina Taylor. When the girls are out on the court they are always shouting everything out, and letting their teammates know what's going on on opposite sides of the court, that they may not see when defending their girl. This sort of help in the game allows each girl to have a better sense of what is going on around her, and help her to adapt to quick actions by the other team, at a faster pace.
The girls on this team are not only close on the court, but develop strong relationships off the court as well. "These girls are all my bestfriends, I know that they're here for anything I am going through, and I am here for them at the same time." said sophomore Emi Rosario. The team participates in a lot of activites which bring them closer, even beyond their natural friendships with eachother. "We just had a fundraiser, and all sort of helped eachother out, if one person wasn't making a lot of sales another person would give them one of their customers." said senior Brittany Berger. This sort of unity and trust are great assests to making a strong team. Since basketball runs through winter break, the girls have an annual christmas party, which is wildly anticipated through out all the players. "I love the Christmas parties we have, it gives us a night to just unwind and hang out in a more calm atmosphere than a basketball court." said senior Erin Riley.
With the closeness of the team, and the quickness of their feet, the Stroudsburg Lady Mounties are in for a promising season of rebuilding, and aquiring a lot of knowledge. "I am really excited for this season, I think all of the girls have a lot of athletic talent to contribute to the team, and combined will take us far." said Ryan. With the girls love for the game and their love for eachother, they will stretch farther than most teams and greatly succeed in more ways than just winning.
