the party was interesting. the hostess was courteous enough to hand me four jello shots, a beer, and a shot of gin to catch me up to everyone. near the end of the night after most people had left, a guy had forced himself on to the then very drunken hostess, but he was unfortunately too drunk to realize his advance was unwanted. once i took enough interest to notice the other three men, all friends of the maiden in distress, were doing nothing about it and had no plans on intervening, i was compelled to walk in the room and announce my candidacy. i was then directed upstairs and to the room where the assailant had taken refuge. i step in.
"HEY!"
the lady runs into her closet, "get in him out! get him out!"
"Listen bud,"
"dude, what the fuck, can i get dressed first?"
"yeah sure. you, (the damsels friend that showed me the way), get her out of here."
i exited, shutting the door behind me. a few minutes and it was opened. the perp and i landed at the foot of the stairs as someone brought his friends from the back patio to the now very awkward front room. his friends start their way out the main door and just as we begin to feel relief we hear, "i forgot my coat."
while we're scavenging for the coat of this now unwelcome man, the damsels friend bounds down the stairs.
"what is he..!"
i advance towards her with my hands raised. "calm down, i have it under control. you're yelling will only sidetrack him and cause him to stay longer. please." i resume the hunt and all during it he is saying to me, "i really didn't mean any harm. i really like her. she's a real nice girl."
"i know." i said to him. "but people are uncomfortable and some are angry and it would be best if you left. you understand?"
"yeah, anything. im just real sorry."
i wasn't sure who was playing who but it was working out for the both of us.

coat found, man removed, i made way to the back patio of the apartment to stare out the open gate at all the other privacy fences, beat up junkers and random assortments of trash. i found a dark spot among my own fence and trash, away from the tall security lights. my friend walks out.
"what are you doing?"
i look at her, out the gate, back at her.
"enjoying the scenery."
"you're crazy, come back inside. it's too cold out here."
i shrug my shoulders. "i like it."
she sits on my lap wearing a skirt and a long sleeve t. i hug her tightly.
"you should go inside. you aren't dressed for this."
"ill go if you go."

inside i find a bag containing zinfandel forming into slush inside the freezer. i slice the bladder open and empty the contents into a plastic goblet and meander towards the front room. i lean against the doorway surveying all the guests and notice my friend caught up in conversation with people that have muted eyes and less empathy than i do. the back door appears appetizing again.

instead of just sitting in a bleak corner i opt for something more interesting; the patio roof, where i fortunately find a lawn chair waiting for me. a few peaceful moments pass when my former maiden in distress barrels through the back door, drops to all fours and pukes. She then flops on to her back and lay there gasping with drunken euphoria lightly etched upon her face. i lean over to speak.
"you ok?"
"what?! how did you get up there! i've always wanted to climb up there!"
i ignored her question and turned to face the scenery again. my friend, our friend, walks out and checks on her. she helps the darling princess back inside as i sit with my frozen wine staring out over the dingy apartment landscape dotted with black and white trash bags, dogs with no room to run, sad, starved cats, and sadder people.
