Taeil walked through the streets toward his favorite ice cream shop, The hunter kid not far behind him, babbling about something. Taeil had stopped listening, he had more important things on his mind. Why was he doing this? Why did he agree to this? There was an alley coming up to his right, he could grab the kid, duck down it, and then be done with this. Maybe the kid’s friends would come after him, sure. But he could just kill them, too. It’s not like he’d never killed hunters before. His eyes focused on the alleyway, and kept locked on it, even after his body had already passed it. He didn’t know why, but he didn’t want to kill the kid. Maybe he just wanted to know what made him tick. Why this kid had these crazy ideas of pacified vampires, and whatever else he believed in. Maybe it was because he was odd himself, or more likely it was because the kid was one of the few people to pay attention to his existence at all. Pathetic, he told himself. He glanced behind him again. The kid smiled and waved at him.
A minute later, they arrived at the small shop. Taeil pulled open the door, and walked straight in, the kid not far behind. He looked around. It was right before closing, and the place was empty. Good. He didn’t want to wait. He went straight to the counter.
“Hot fudge Sundae, and whatever he wants.” He said, gesturing towards the kid.
The kid’s face lit up, and he was grinning like crazy, wide-eyed as he stared at the menu. It astounded Taeil that this kid could possibly be a hunter at all, let alone catch him. Well…To be honest he had practically allowed himself to be captured. He thought he could go along, break out, and possibly kill a few hunters. He had been horribly bored. He hadn’t expected to be given morality lectures or convinced to live off of blood packs. Was he really going to do that?
“Strawberry. With a waffle cone and chocolate syrup and some of those candies on it too, please! Thank you!~” The kid said, leaning over the counter.
Taeil handed the money to the guy at the register, while the other employee made their ice cream. Neither of them looked pleased to have customers this close to closing. Taeil couldn’t say he felt bad. He didn’t. Thankfully, the kid was quiet as they waited, watching everything. The kid seemed to have a curiosity about everything, as if the mechanics of making sundaes and ice cream cones were unbelievably interesting. He envied that, because nothing interested him anymore. Finally, their order was done, and Taeil grabbed his sundae, and passed the cone over to the kid.
“I’m going outside.” He announced, fully aware the kid would follow.
Taeil chose a seat, and sat down at one of the many tables outside, and immediately started to dig into the sundae. He knew some vampires didn’t bother with human food after they were turned, but he didn’t see why. He loved sweets. He had a horrible sweet-tooth.
“Thank you for the ice cream!” The kid said, in-between mouthfuls.
“No problem.”
“What’s your name? “ The kid asked him.
“Taeil.”
The kid beamed.
“I’m Taemin! We have good names.’ He said, nodding.
Taeil shrugged.
“You don’t talk much, do you? Just like Jay….”
“No one’s ever bothered to talk to me before.” Taeil said, scooping up a big spoonful of hot fudge.
“Oh. So you’re just shy, then. That’s cute~” Taemin said, grinning.
Taeil frowned. Him? Cute? Shy? Those were not words he’d choose to describe himself.
“No. It’s not like that.” He said.
“Yes it is.” Taemin said dismissively, eyeing the bottom part of his cone which was chocolate-dipped.
“Don’t bite it. You still have ice-cream left, and if you bite the end off, it’ll all drip out of the bottom.” Taeil said.
“I’ll eat it out of the bottom, then. I want to taste the waffle part.”
Why did this kid do everything the hard way, the backwards way, the weird way? What was his story? Taeil stared as Taemin did the exact opposite of what he should be doing and bit off the bottom of his cone, and then made a surprised squeak as the melty pink goo flowed out.
“I told you.”
“It was just more than I thought! I got it!” Taemin said, tilting his head at a weird angle and sticking the bottom of the cone in his mouth. He looked like a cartoon character with a funnel in his mouth. Taeil almost laughed.
Eventually, to Taeil’s surprise, Taemin got the flood of ice cream under control. He didn’t know what was keeping him at the table, he had finished his sundae long ago, and he just watched while the kid finished his cone.
“Give me your phone.”
“What? Why?” Taemin asked him.
“I’m going to give you my number.”
To his surprise Taemin didn’t ask why, he just handed over his phone, which jingled because of all the little charms on it. This kid.
He programmed his number in, and handed the phone back to Taemin.
“If you get into trouble, call me.”
The kid nodded.
“I guess I’ll see you.”
“You will. I’m going to be keeping an eye on you, like I said.”
Taeil nodded, and walked off, still confused as to exactly why he was doing any of this.
