[TM] 254 - The Longest Day

Oct 24, 2008 08:53

There was no place hairier to get stuck than in one’s own head, and the day after they all left was no damn exception.

He doesn’t remember a whole hell of a lot other than the thoughts, because that’s all there are. It’s a little like being stuck in a sensory deprivation tank, where there’s no tactile sensations to ground him, no smells or sounds to lock him into any particular time and place. He could have been on the island; he could have been back on the mainland. Hell, he could have been on that goddamn freighter, he couldn’t have told a living soul for certain.

Sawyer only knew he was still there because the next day he woke up, two days removed, and he was still on that miserable rock.

The day lived inside his own skull is the longest he’ll ever know. He still recalls the vivid scenarios he painted in his head of the cause behind that ominous column of smoke. He sees them all…Jack, Kate, Aaron, Jin and Sun with her little bun in the oven, going boom or just going up.

He remembers his last taste of Kate. He remembers Jack’s eyes on them both. He remembers the surprise at hitting the water and feeling no pain. The way the ocean simply opened to him, sucking him in instead of slamming him hard just like it was welcoming him home…

He lives in his own final moments and he lives in theirs because someone’s got to know. Someone’s got to remember for everyone because there’s always a chance they could still shake loose, and why shouldn’t he be the one to tell their story?

She couldn’t believe that rescue would never come, but she was gone now.

At the end of the longest day, the weight of their stories, their final moments…and all their hopes fell to rest on his shoulders.
