It was beneath the most terrible moonlight
that the crowd started to form around the ghastly sight -
even the intrepid fireman had lost any mien of authority
as he stood enraptured by the tragic scene .

For behind their masks and painted faces -
the closest shades of white on white
that have far surpassed all difference thresholds -
these cannibals hid their longing looks
with a smile perpetually painted to conceal all emotion.

And the carrousel was playing a requiem
as the amiable souls moved to the macabre beats -
Oh! consternation could not permeate the euphoric bubble
surrounding these avatars of moral apathy.

Not a person was left out as they danced
away the debris of their humanity;
even the unfortunate midget found a partner in a kindly child
for even mere mud can feel superior at times.

Albeit with the advent of the police
came a semblance of order
as they tried to disperse the blithe crowd,
even the sensation of being wronged by such injustice
could not penetrate the air of apprehension.

Yet with the orgiastic lurch of the Ferris wheel,
all attention was redirected to the radiant focus of the evening -
the autocratic ringleader could not have foretold
the conclusion of these events.

Even the fortunetellers - beneath their guise
of piety and omniscience -
were secretly planning the tale they would tell,
their future cocktail story behind the sanctimonious mask of prayer.

For if the girl managed to securely grasp
the remaining strands of life -
dangling as spiritlessly as she-
these expecting people would not have
any such enthralling story to tell.

But Oh!, if the she were to plummet to her untimely demise,
there would always be the dolefully entrancing statement
that they had seen a girl die that night.
