SMeyer - just, why?

Aug 06, 2008 08:15

This is by no means a review - even if I did have the time it's not worth the effort. I guess this is my reaction post after about 4 days of stewing over it all. But I keep answering my flist with comments on their posts and I just feel like I should get it out there you know? *sigh* Anyway, it's all behind the cut although at this point anything ( Read more... )

eclipse, new moon, edward cullen!!!, breaking dawn, fandom gunk, twilight

I added you back. We have a few fandoms in common I see ;)

I'm didn't really have huge expectations either - not nearly as large as I did last year for Eclipse anyway. But I honestly think it was just being exposed to the fandom for so long - reading interviews with SMeyer, reading fanfic, etc. that really just fed these types of responses. Plus, and this is a biggy - this fandom is kinda batshit. *shhhh - don't tell* I wonder a bit how this book would have been recieved as a whole if it wasn't 'the end'? I am not sure my opinion would have changed but then again my problems with the book were mostly character and plot related.

I understand your stand on fandom. I play on the fringes for the most part now as well. That doesn't mean just being exposed to some aspects of fandom don't drive you to the limit. It totally can. I went down that road long ago and now I just stay off message boards and keep to my flist here on lj for the most part. But you have the right idea - I can be a rebel in the face of fandom as well. Not that I don't like debating or reading other peoples views on character - because I very much do - but I just don't sway very much based on the crowd.

Thank you for finding me composed. I thought it came out a bit harsher than when I started. I'm glad that you got the less harsh vibe from it. It was mostly just my gobbly-gook. Now my review of Breaking Dawn last year, now that was a good post. Back when I was happy and in love... *sigh* Better days indeed. ;D

Well thanks for the add back! It's always nice to meet new people and in the last month I've made a real effort to find new faces to add to the friends list, I really needed to diversify.

Aren't all fandoms a bit batshit in some way, shape or form!?! I've heard that the Twilight fandom is particularly batshit but then I think it's the cool thing to hate on right now so I've pretty much taken that with a grain of salt. I've just found that what I find really interesting is the people who enjoy things (or not in this instance ;) )and then discuss them in their LJ. I am like you that I completely enjoy debating and reading other people's views on something, it can give me a different perspective and that's just cool. The thing about fandom, for me, is that when I'm totally neck deep in it...it's not that I'm being so much as swayed by the crowd but the hive mind totally starts to take effect. I often have to take a mental step back and find out what I really feel about something because it's just so easy to get caught up.

Also I find that if I read too many people saying the same thing and going on an on about it, I tend to get really turned off by something that I used to find joy in.

I did find you very composed, it seems like a lot of people are feeling very let down by this book and I can totally understand why that is so upsetting. I'm so fresh and new to this series/saga (what is the difference) that I almost read one right after the other (I only just read Twilight a few months ago). So maybe that is why I didn't have a lot of time to become very invested in it and it didn't give me a whole lot of time to form real concrete opinions on the characters or the directions they were heading. I don't know.

Your very welcome and I am happy I did. I didn't have a whole lot of time but I did just check out your lj a bit and we are about the same age and stuff - so it all works out.

Yes - fandom is batshit as a general rule. But some much more than others. Some are very nice and friendly and just lovely places, some are pretty enjoyable in smaller doses, adn then some should be avoided at absolutely all costs. I have only ever been in one fandom 'neck deep' and it almost killed my fangirl spirit. Lessons were learned and now I find that this lj way of life works best for me. I can talk about anything or nothing and if someone has something to add or comment, they can. Same with me.

I think your freshness to the series did add to your acceptance and enjoyment a bit. It's kinda like when we watch TV shows and have to wait week after week and summer hiatus. Even without being involved in fandom - as individuals we stew about it. Whereas if you marathon a show via internet or DVDs you often miss the big OMG!TERRIBLE! things that drive other people a bit mad. Honestly I love to marathon anything. If I had any self control at all I would prefer to only watch completed or almost completed TV shows. I find my love for them is unhindered by so many things. But alas, I have ZERO self control.

I think we'll have fun getting to know one another. I have been somewhat silent for a few months - but I am getting back in the groove of updating more often.

I just read your review of Eclipse, that was a good post!! Maybe part of the problem with BD is that there was three books of build and then the last book had way too much crammed into it. It would have been nice if there had been more time taken with Bella's transformation and how that effected her and Edwards relationship and then subsequently her relationship to all of the Cullens. I would have liked for this book to be at least two stand alone books. Because I am so new to all of this I don't know if there is a specific reason that S. Meyer only did four books, it just seems a little odd seeings how the last one seems so rushed.

Okay, I'm going to stop yammering all over your LJ now.

Thanks. Yeah, that was what I was like when I was only a few months out from marathoning the first 2 books and was insanely in love with the series.

I don't know about the rush or not. But there were some fundemental plot points that I just didn't like for the series and the tone of this book was a bit off for me. The Edward I fell in love with was a shadow of his former self, Jacob should have not been in the book at all IMO - when he rode off in Eclipse he should have started his own adventures (she has expressed that she would like to write more about him in the future - but that this book would "wrap up the E/B story with a nice little bow" - more like confetti if ask me, but bygones...), the pregnancy was sooooooo fanfic. The almost fight at the end gave me bloodlust - seriously - I wanted a smackdown with all that build up, AND just the whole Renessme thing was just too strange. Plus, I thought the lack of love scenes cut out like scenes in a soap opera. Eclipse was way hotter.

Anyway - yeah. It's just a huge can of worms and believe me I can babble and yammer with the best of them.
