Tuesday's post a little late...

(I apologize. I wrote most of this yesterday but due to all the painting I had
to do when I got home I didn’t get to finish this. I’ll try to get one for today up later. I’m counting this as Tuesday’s though… >_>)

Ok...Becca must not have seen my comment on her challenge yet so I'm still without topics that people are interested in me babbling about. Everyone please feel free to suggest something...anything.

I'm pretty irritated today.

That being said this probably won't be the best post in the world. My family
is having issues again and I can't say my last week at work is turning out
spectacular. More so than that though is my room project. If I had just given
myself 1-2 more days to work with...that probably would have been plenty. As
it is I'm busting my ass to get everything done by Friday before I go up to
Statesboro.

So what should I talk about today? How about personal fitness? That seems to
be something I've been exploring again this summer.

I've never been big on exercising...chalk it up to being lazy, having better
things to do, or finding it too boring to stand for an extended period of
time. Just not something I really enjoyed doing with my free time.

As a youngin' I played a plethora of little league sports (though most people
say they can't see me playing sports). I was what I liked to call your average
"seasonal sports player". I played baseball in the spring, soccer in the fall,
and basketball in the winter. I liked having my summers off (some things don't
really change XP). Basketball only happened for a few years. I've never been
good at the game. I always had the height and the ability to shoot...I just
suck at actively dribbling the ball. Still do. I think I had the highest
percentage of rebounds the years I played...I was such a "cherry picker". XP
Soccer and baseball went on for quite a while. I played soccer actively from
kindergarten though about 5th grade. We tried to revive my private school team
in 8th grade...but it didn't turn out so good (we only had two goals the whole
season...and they were on ourselves *lol*). When it came to soccer I used to
be really athletic at the start. As the years went on though I kept drifting
back in the positions towards defense until I was playing goalie for part of
my last year (basically I got more and more out of shape during the off
season). I played baseball with a pitching machine when I was younger...and I
think my last year was the one when I switched to real pitching. I was always
a right fielder. Didn't require a lot of running around (and I was one of the
few kids that could whip the ball to home plate from the outfield). I was an
average hitter...either I struck out or I hit it a ton. According to my dad I
didn't want to play much more after I got beaned in the head by a pitch. >_< I
don't really remember though...

Basically though I quit playing all sports at the onset of high school. I had
always played casually and I wasn't really good enough at any one sport to get
on a team. The first three years of high school were a pretty lazy time for
me.

I've never been an exceedingly active person. Despite playing sports I became
quite a chubby little youngster. I was always the kid that protested going out
to play because I'd rather let my imagination run with toys or play video
games. I really just had more fun doing those things. *shrug* It gave me quite
a reputation with my neighborhood friends though…one that is still around
somewhat even today.

During my last year of high school I decided to take weight training as an
elective. It was really awkward for me at first (I was one of the
goodie-goodie brainiac students and most of the guys in there were
underachievers, athletes, problem students, and the mentally handicapped). I
got to know some of them though and it became bearable. I learned a few things
taking that class. 1) To be effective you really need to exercise each
and every day. 2) Weight training doesn't do much for your figure (I bulked up
with muscle...but with no cardio I didn't lose a lot of fat).

I didn't actively exercise for over two years after I graduated high school. A
few summers ago I took up riding my bike every day. I noticed a difference in
my appearance by the end of the summer which make me feel better (of all
things my ass got really toned *lol*). Once again though I only used half of
the equation. Straight cardio with no strength training just doesn't cut it either.

I took almost two years off of actively exercising again. This last year
at school though was really rough on my body. My diet was terrible (by the end
of the year I was eating out almost half of my meals in a given week) and I
wasn't active at all (when I wasn't working on senior design I was relaxing
with my friends). I started feeling myself slipping into being really out of
shape again...so this summer I started swimming.

We joined the neighborhood pool for the first time in almost 10 years and I've
been swimming laps for almost two months now. I started doing 5 laps a day and
now I'm doing 15. I've also attempted to start eating a little better and cut
some of the sugar out of my diet. There's been a noticeable change because I can
tighten my belt for work two notches more now than I did when I started. The
problem is once again that I'm not strength training. I hope to alleviate this
when I get back to school and have access to a gym. I figure swimming/biking three times a week and working out on the machines twice a week would be a good plan.

Why the sudden obsession with fitness? Well...I don’t know really. I become obsessed with something every few months. I’d like to make this into more of a trend though. Transitioning from home to school has a way of ending anything I had been doing over the summer.

Of course I’m also doing it to improve my own physical appearance. In addition to being healthy it doesn’t hurt to come out of it with a trim stomach and some muscles to show off. XP

I’m kind of hoping I can set an example for some of my friends. My closest friends at school aren’t in what I would call the best of shape (what nerds and geeks are?). That and I’ve found it’s much easier to exercise when people you know do it with you.

I’ve also adopted the philosophy that I can’t expect physical attributes from other people if I don’t have them myself (I guess I’m mostly speaking in terms of females). I really hate when completely out of shape guys sit there and expect to go after girls that are walking around wearing size 0 clothes. Then there are guys that are already dating a girl. You know…the ones that sit there and bitch that their other has put on some weight when they’re a disgusting waste of space themselves. It might just be that I’ve been stuck with a group of horny old men all summer…but my view on this has become a little harsher.

I guess that’s about it though…hopefully the result of all this will be positive. I’d love to lose the paunch. I’ll leave you with a vocabulary lesson that Kiks taught me a while back. XP

Pooch: the little tummy a girl gets that can sometimes drop below the waistline

Paunch: the male equivalent…not quite a gut but just enough to cover up your abs and jiggle
