I posted this earlier on a different board, so I'll share some favorites here too.
I looked back at GoodReads (which doesn't have as many books as my actual list does for 2023, so obviously I forgot to include some
) and a lot of my 5-star rated books are in some favorite series, like October Daye (Sleep No More), a few Kate Daniels which I caught up on this year, Sebastian St Cyr (Who Cries for the Lost), Thursday Murder Club (Last Devil to Die), some Horatio Hornblower, which I'm still working my way through and a reread of Exodus by Leon Uris.
Other books I particularly liked this year are:
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
A Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese
The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel
The Autobiography of Henry VIII by Margaret George
Greenwood by Michael Christie
Nothing More Dangerous by Allen Eskens
The Galaxy and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers
Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See
Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
Some non-fiction that I particularly liked - or thought were good books even if the subject matter was tough:
Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths by Natalie Haynes
The Heroine's Journey by Gail Carriger
The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander Newfoundland by Jim DeFede
Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi
Making It So: A Memoir by Patrick Stewart
Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning by Liz Cheney
Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism by Rachel Maddow
