Do you remember when you were in third grade, and your teacher told you that in middle school, you would be forced to write in cursive all the time? And then you got to middle school, and all your teachers told you that they preferred print to sloppy cursive? They also told you that in high school, things would be entirely different, and would start sentences saying "And in high school, they won't let you do this....And in high school, they won't be so lenient...And in high school, they will never round your scores up." So then high school came around, and most of your teachers are pretty lenient if you are on the border, and in fact, quite helpful, interesting, funny, and nice. At the same time however, they tell you that "things in college will be so much different....professors will never wait this long for you to copy notes.....professors won't ever give you notes some times." However this time, i believe what they say.
In u.s. history on friday, we had a discussion about how we are always being trained for the work force...and it got me thinking about how it always seems like we are constantly being groomed for the next level...that for every time we think we can settle down and work at our own pace, we are incessantly reminded of how in the latter parts of our life, our current state will have changed. Is it the teacher's obligation to always remind the student how it won't be like this in the coming years? Why couldnt they just let us be what we had to at that level. It's not like historically, kids have faltered when their teachers never reminded them of these things. Im pretty sure most people can make it without being told what will or won't happen. Although this feeling is minute, i always felt a bit guilty everytime they said this, as if i did something wrong by trying to assimilate to their curriculum at the time. Intrinsically, i think humans know that the equilibrium is always going to be different. This started to make me think about how most of us always have some sort of goal we need to accomplish...whether at this state it is getting good grades/good extra curriculurs for college...or later by trying to maintain your sanity in college while trying to come out on top to get a great first paying job. And at that point you'll try to survive off of what you make, and hope you can move up the rank while looking for someone to spend your life with. After that its making enough money to support your kids....then saving money for sending them to college...trying to live as close to debt free as possible...and then having enough money for retirement. Granted, we all can be happy at every part of our life..( I mean i hope i can be)...but i just find it interesting that we are always working towards something.
