Depends... but if you can model and dress a set without causing props and set assets to pile up in the pipeline, you'd be a huge asset. Of course, I'm talking about TV and film... not video games.
You should help your classmates out and get the experience and credits. You start working on a reel yet? Wouldn't hurt.
I was trying to make some passing attempt at wedding two areas of interest of mine. And of course that comes only without the framework of actual industry experience. In my mind, at least, they didn't seem so far apart.
I can model props and set up a scene fairly quickly. I've worked with 3 groups so far as part of their production pipeline and have usually been able to get things produced on or ahead of schedule.
But yes, it's definitely time to start assembling a reel. I've finally gotten to the point where I have a decent amount of portfolio (or near-portfolio) level work.
