Musings of the Inner and Outer Child

Aug 26, 2007 13:35

Bridget, despite numerous efforts to the contrary, had begun reading self-help books again. This time, it happened to be The Last Self-help Book You'll Ever Need: Repress Your Anger, Think Negatively, Be a Good Blamer, And Throttle Your Inner Child , and to be quite honest, she was beginning to think that the title was extremely misleading. Tim had brewed tea because he knew Bridget was going to be in the rec room, and he was determined that it would be good.

So he'd let it steep for about half an hour.

Armed with something that sort of smelled like proper tea, sugar, and milk in his arms, he was heading through the door when he spotted Dixon. His eyebrows crawled up towards his hairline and he grinned, a bit incredulously.

"And just where do you think you're going, then?"

Bridget glanced up from her book to find a scenario that was, by all accounts, every mother's worst nightmare.

Well, probably not every WOMAN, but certainly every mother. Most mothers. or at least most GOOD mothers.

Her son was missing. He'd been right there on his blanket just ten seconds ago, and now he was nowhere in sight.

"Oh god," She said, slightly disbelieving, because not even she could have cocked things up this badly. Forgetting where she'd put the clean nappies was one thing-- misplacing her son was another.

Fuck fuck fuck

She came to her feet quickly, and was headed out the rec room door to verbally assault whomever had thought it was a good idea to simply walk off with someone else's child, when she found both Tim and Dixon, the latter of which actually getting around on his own.

"Oh my god."

"Oh my God," Tim repeated, but happily, and scooted around to set down his items down on the nearest flat surface, then walked back, sliding his hand across her back before he dropped to a crouch in front of Dixon.

"Were you not going to tell your mum you were going off for a stroll?"

"A--apparently not!" Bridget said, interrupting herself with an incredulous laugh for a second. It really seemed like just yesterday, he'd learned how to sit up on his own. "Tim he's..." She trailed off, a bright grin spreading across her face.

"Not developmentally impaired?" Tim filled in with a grin that was slightly teasing, but mostly just outright glad. He laughed a little, as well, then reached out a hand to rest his palm on Dixon's head.

"Does talking come after crawling?"

"I think it might-- I'm not sure," She said, realizing that she'd have to check one of her baby books to make sure. But then again, he was already trying out new sounds on a regular basis, so it seemed as though that was just around the corner as well. To be honest, just then, she was still a little amazed at it all.

"well," Tim said, pressing his lips together, eyebrows lifting for a moment, "you know what this means." He smiled up at her with a vaguely conspiratorial look.

"You're doing something right."

"Unless he's just trying to get away from me, and wasn't able to until now," She joked, bending down to pick up Dixon before she kissed him on both of his cheeks and his little forehead.

"I'm sure not," Tim said, lifting the tea et all back up. "Can't blame him for trying to strike out on his own, though. Must be fairly exciting, to be able to, even if it takes for limbs to try."

"...especially after almost seven months where his sole mode of transportation was being carried about," She said, grinning at them both, bouncing Dixon in her arms for a moment. "Oh! You brought tea!"

"I did!" he said, and laughed a little. "I thought it would be a nice if mundane sort of surprise, but, well. Dixon sort of stole my thunder, didn't he?"

"No, not really," She said, leaning over to kiss him on the cheek. "Well, now that I'm pretty sure he's done with his little exodus....shall we?"

It wasn't as though she hadn't already seen Tim that day, but...well...she found herself taking advantage of every little moment that she could find to spend time with him.

Tim grinned at the kiss, ducking his head slightly, then turned his head to catch her mouth back for a longer moment. At which point he then pulled back and acquiesced.

"Sure! What were you in the middle of, that he decided to make a break for it?" he asked, starting further into the room.

"Reading," She answered, following him as he walked, "Apparently he's not too fond of self-help literature."

Which is perfectly understandable, given the second-rate quality of the bookshelf's offerings. Really! It is too much to ask for bookshelf to produce a copy of Mars and Venus?

"...Self help books?" Tim repeated, eyebrows inching up. "Is this for an article?" He sat, tugging over another chair to set things out on before he started to fix Bridget's tea the way she liked it. He knew this because every time she made it he watched as closely but inconspicuously as he could.

"Oh, no," Bridget said, taking a seat of her own, Dixon on her lap for the moment. She was, perhaps, slightly worried that he might make another break for it. "It actually puts things into perspective."
