The Corpse Bride
Review By Christel Warren

"Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" is a film about a betrothed couple, Victor Von Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp) and Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson), who have never met in their lives but are engaged for the sake of their families. When Victoria hears Victor playing the piano, she approaches him and after they speak, they both become rather taken with each other. During the wedding rehearsal, a mysterious guest appears as Victor fumbles to remember his vows. After the rehearsal, Victor takes a walk in the woods and suddenly, the words come to him easily; as he recites them, he places his ring on a stray branch. When he realizes the branch is not a plant but the hand of a corpse dressed in a wedding gown, Victor is horrified to find out that he has lawfully wedded himself to a dead woman waiting for her true love.

Victor finds himself among his newlywed wife's own kind and during his disappearance, he finds that the mysterious wedding guest has taken his place as Victoria's groom. Despairing, Victor turns to the corpse bride, who is broken-hearted when she discovers that her fumbling husband is really in love with a rosy, living woman.

From someone who walked into the theaters expecting a film as mediocre as Tim Burton's similarly stylistic "Nightmare Before Christmas", it says a lot about this film's quality when I say that I enjoyed it very much. The gothic look of Jack the skeleton never really appealed to me and I found "Nightmare" less than memorable, but the wacky, simply clever humor and catchy musical numbers of "Corpse Bride" really caught me. While a lot of the setting and some of the characters in the film were rather cliché, the gothic style of the movie really brought it alive, as well as the voice acting talents of Depp and the rest of the cast. There wasn't a perfect ending for all of the characters (and I won't spoil it for you), but it wouldn't have been as good if there had been. This movie was utterly delightful, fun, and touching at the same time. The previews for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire didn't hurt, either. The characters all come alive, even (perhaps especially) the dead ones, and this amazingly written, directed, and animated film is bound to become another great hit of Tim Burton's.
