i've been over thinking again.
i thought i'd share a theory.
each individual, no matter how stuborn or independent, has a true neeed to conform at least on some level.
this is partly because we are social beings and need some form of interaction. to achieve this we must curve our behavious to be considered acceptable by society. for some of us it's very easy to act the way society tells us to and for others it's difficult. and of course there are different levels of acceptablity. you have those who simply don't buy the correct cloths or brand names and are considered "different", and then you have the sort of people who piss in public and refuse to conform to any "polite" behavious. we have labels and stigmas for all sorts of behavious to stop people challanging the boundries. the question is however is this a bad thing. is social presure essential to stop people acting out on impulse. which is the greater evil, society or the individual?
either way however there is a delicate balance between the 2 and one should never fully cancel out the other.
my favourite quote at the moment is "when you find yourself on the side of the majority it is then time to pause and reflect"- mark twain. that doesn't mean that you are always wrong if you are on the majority's side, simply that you have to force yourself to question your own actions. if you are on the side of the minority you have already had to justify why.
i supose to some people this might all be common sence, however to me it is much deeper. as someone who daily struggles with social pressure vs individual thought it interesting to study the balance between the 2.
most people will intsantly believe the individual deserves the greater control, however we are often thinking of our own lives when we say this and simply don't think society should control us. but id we look at it the other way and examine everyone else we can see other people have a strong patencial to eviel and it society controling or punishing them doesn't seem so wrong. where does the balance lie.
