Alone at night with nothing to do
music blaring from the speaks.
All my friends are asleep
the tv is no longer interesting
for its filled with old shows with no color.
Boring some would say but now I realize its beauty.
Black, white and gray.
Nothing bright to distract those eyes from its purpose.
How it is, is how it is seen.
Simple.
Time rewinds in my head and stops on a moment I thought was so ‘simple.’
A night between me and you is now my present.
I look to you and you’re eyes say it all.
They are simple as well.
When you look at me I see the love inside them
just ready to come pouring out into my soul.
You keep looking into my eyes
and the color in yours begin to swirl like a whirlpool.
The colors blend and start to almost overflow
and take its course within my body.
Right as they are about to be released from you
everything becomes still.
Nothing is happening anymore.
It ended with the turn of your head
towards your lap where your cell phone’s ring consumes your mind.
You don’t push it aside like it doesn’t matter,
you answer it and then everything around you is gone.
You go into deep conversation and I am left just staring at you.
I hear her voice on the other end.
Her. Voice.
The voice of the girl who means nothing to you.
Or so you say.
She asks what you are doing.
You don’t glance over to me at all.
You reply, ‘nothing,’ and continue to speak,
‘hanging out with my friend.’
My heart drops to the ground and my still feet trample over it.
The transformation that was being made just seconds ago
is forgotten in my mind and in yours as well.
I let go of your hand and shift over to the other side of the car.
My head leans against the cold window
and my eyes swell up with tears.
‘Friend.’
Breathing becomes heavier with a hint of a tremble.
My lips shiver as if I was standing naked in the snow.
You do not notice this one bit.
You get aggravated at the girl
who makes you forget I even exist.
I hear the click of your phone closing, ending the call.
With your headphones around your neck,
you press play on the walkman.
Your face turns towards your window and you close your eyes.
You fell asleep.
The memory fades.
How simple that was.
You're eyes showed lies that night
but her voice brought the truth.
My hand reaches for the remote
tempted to change the channel.
'Simple.'
I throw the heavy object at the tv
breaking the lies on the television.
Nothing is as simple as we think.
