Well, that's nice. I had to remove my post asking for help because it was spammed on a CRNA forum because they were offended that I considered money a perk of the career. I'm sure they're all willing to do their jobs for minimum wage ( Read more... )

Lame!

My friend Cara had to make this decision a couple years ago and it was hard for her, too, because she saw so many different ways she could go that she would really enjoy. In the end she chose being a nurse in the birthing center because she also wants to go into midwifery later on. She has never regretted her decision once and loves it. All it took was her first unassisted delivery and she was in total heaven! BUT, that of course does not mean it would be the most interesting place for you. She did not get her first pic doing her internship at the birthing center. She worked in ICU and found that that was not the place for her. She got lucky in being accepted and employed at the birthing center even though that is not where she learned...

That's cool. A lot of students expect to get hired out of their IP placements, but with the economy as it is they might be surprised. Many places are on hiring freezes right now.

One of my reservations about midwifery is the schedule. That might get really hard to wake up in the middle of the night randomly....

It's true that Cara goes from working nights 4 days to days 3 days after a 4 day break and it is reeking havoc with her. She says a lot of the night nurses are addicted to Ambiam (sp). She has small children, but they are in school. It would be much harder for you to do with your babe!

Well, luckily it would be a while before I'm actually working. First I finish nursing school, then I have to work for a while, then I apply and go through the masters program.

I think you may have the same prob with being a CRNA. I don't know if it works the same way everywhere, but there is an anesthesia group that works for both major hospitals here and the anesthesiologists get called in the middle of the night randomly all the time to do epidurals and C-Sections and all kinds of surgeries in other units. Just an fiy. :)

Well, another question I have is about midwifery groups. Do they work differently? The midwifery group I went to with Elliot and the one my friend went to both have midwives who see you during your normal appointments and then you see whomever is on call when you go into labor.

So how does that work? Do they have regular schedules and then on call shifts? I wouldn't mind getting woken up in the middle of the night occasionally, but all the time would get annoying.

What is your schedule like?

I know this is a late response. I have my lj stuff sent to an email I rarely check. Maybe I should fix that ( ... )

Thank you so much! That sounds totally do-able. Exhausting, but do-able. What do you think about it?

I requested perinatal for my immersion. I find out on monday what I got.
