this killed me dead in a joyful way, and it will do the same for you.
i had my superstar evening last night, and it was pretty kickass. the
production was quite good, if almost inaudible at times, dinner with high-powered work people was excellent, and cate and hugo did a marvelous job (as well as the rest of the cast, but really i was rooting for hugo the whole time). at the reception afterwards the norwegian consulate gave cate an award that appeared to be a little black statue of ibsen wearing a top hat, and she said a few words about the role, including that it involves talking about concepts like honor and beauty that are almost incomprehensible in today's morally bankrupt society. then they randomly announced that gloria steinem and marilyn french were in the audience, and marilyn french came up and said a few words!! which was excellent, because you know, i've heard gloria talk a bunch of times, and marilyn was frail and radical and fairly inspiring, though she basically talked about how terrible the world is and how it could be better but isn't. hugo spent much of this time standing really close to a man i didn't recognize; they each had an arm about the other's waist. so cute! he grew a full beard for the role and looks approximately an eon younger. i tried to get his autograph but failed to breach the perimeter. sigh. and now i get to charge overtime until 11:30 at night, which will be awfully helpful when my next bills come due. thanks, worker protections!
my coup came at dinner when we were talking about upcoming productions, and i happened to mention the upcoming revival of the threepenny opera at studio 54, starring cyndi lauper, alan cumming, ana gasteyer, and nellie mckay, of all people, with costumes by isaac mizrahi. i didn't think anyone would pick up on it, but the donor was like, are you interested in that show? and i was like, um, YES, and she was like, great, we should all go! so, AWESOME. except next time i will totally bring ender, as this time we all ended up sitting in different groups anyway.
p.s. i really like when it starts to snow and the bitterness of the cold eases off. it's like a double present. i am sure i would not think the recent weather either cold or bitter if i'd gone to my second-choice school, macalester. i remember when i visited the campus it had just snowed. two feet of snow. and i still loved it. can't remember if the cold was bitter or not, though.
