Acetone is Explosive...
So here we are at Palmer Station...
We're not supposed to be here.
The good news is nobody is hurt.
Several days into the transit we had a major fire in one of the labs. Probably starting from some getto lab friges that we were given (instead of the new ones we ordered), electrical short we think... There was 4 liters of acetone in the 2 friges which exploded. The fire melted a tv into a puddle, the frig doors are gone, the overhead is pealing off, the plumbing in the overhead all melted (which conviently put out the fire), all the plastic in the lab within 3 feet of the ceiling is either gone or a puddle of ooze, light fixtures in the hall and in other rooms up to 20 feet away are patially melted. The lab insturment damage is about $100k, and in the next room were all the network servers and a dozen work stations all running. It was an hour until we were able to shut down the ones that still ran. Total damages $1million? maybe more. The IT people are basically out of work.
Other good news... I may be hoem sooner than planned.
