Hmmm... so nothing happends in my life so I am going to dedicate my LJ to The OC :D
EPISODE 18 - “The Risky Business”
4/7/2005
Kirsten cajoles Sandy into taking over for her as Chair of the OC Charity Yard Sale by reminding him what an MC gets… a microphone and a captive audience! Then Sandy solicits the boys to help him. Ryan and Seth use the “still in school” excuse which leaves the heavy lifting to Trey. While moving furniture around, Trey discovers one of the pieces being auctioned is the original crystal egg from “Risky Business” and it’s appraised at $10,000.
With Julie and Caleb hiding out in Europe and the housekeeper getting deported, Marissa is left all alone in the mansion. Fortunately there’s always room for one more at the Cohen’s, so she moves in for the week.
It’s 6am and Ryan, who’s bunking with Trey in a guest room, is having trouble sleeping. At the same time, Marissa is wide awake in the pool house. Coincidentally, they converge in the kitchen. And it looks like something’s about to happen… when the lights suddenly come on. Trey’s up early getting ready for a long day of apartment hunting. Marissa offers to accompany him.
At the pre-yard sale (which is conspicuously lacking a yard), Sandy is advising the Newpsies on linens and center pieces when Kirsten arrives with Carter. After an awkward moment, Sandy and Carter toast to friendship.
Marissa shows Trey Alex’s old place which is still available. Trey can’t come up with the first, last and security deposit but Marissa thinks fast and makes the landlord an offer he hopefully can’t refuse - Trey as tenant/manager.
Preparations continue at the yard sale when Carter introduces himself to Seth and Zach. They talk comic books and Carter suggests they have enough material for a graphic novel. Zach’s excited about the idea but Seth made a promise to Summer to put such foolishness behind him.
Trey receives a call from the landlord. Bad news. Trey’s background didn’t check out and he can’t risk making him the manager; but he seems like a nice kid so he’ll hold the place for 24 hours to see if he can come up with the cash. Marissa eavesdrops on the conversation without Trey’s knowledge.
Six am comes again and Ryan can’t sleep again. He looks over at Trey’s bed and sees that it’s empty. When Trey returns home, he lies and tells Ryan he was at the new apartment putting up some drywall. Trey brings a breakfast plate out to Marissa in the pool house but apparently she’s not hungry. Marissa confesses she overheard Trey’s conversation with the landlord. She offers to help him come up with the money but he claims he’s got it covered.
Carter shows up at the Cohen’s with some news for Seth and Zach. His old assistant is the VP of development at a graphic novel company and he’s arranged a meeting. Seth thanks him but must decline. Zach doesn’t think Seth realizes what Carter’s offering them, but Seth thinks he does - he’s offering to kill his relationship with Summer. Without too much effort, Zach manages to convince Seth that technically he only promised Summer he’d stay away from comic books, not graphic novels.
Marissa shows up at the auction with a tea set she found in Caleb’s basement. She hands it to Ryan who takes it back to the storage room to tag. Just moments before the auction begins, Ryan notices that the crystal egg from Risky Business has gone missing. Ryan’s first thought is Trey, and Marissa all but confirms his fear when she confides that Trey didn’t actually get the manager job at the apartment building. Trey overhears this and confesses to heisting the egg. He hands the money over to Ryan, who comes up with a plan to get the egg back. Seth follows Ryan out the door and convinces him to let him tag along on the dangerous mission.
Meanwhile, the egg is up next and Marissa and Summer are scrambling to come up with something else to auction off. How ‘bout… Summer’s vintage shoes!
Posing as a representative from the film preservation society, Seth tries to convince a couple of tough-looking dudes to turn over the egg. Instead, they decide to kill him. Ryan grabs the egg and tells Seth to go long before heaving it though the air.
Next up at the auction is… Zach and Trey? The bidding starts off at $800!
Miraculously, Seth catches the egg! Ryan decks one of the guys, drops the cash on top of him, and they take off.
With nothing left to auction, the egg is up… again. Marissa and Summer quickly jump in with a novel idea. You’ve heard of silent auctions? Well, they thought it would be fun to make this a blind auction. So instead of viewing the egg, they’ll describe it. The bidding ends at $10,000 and Ryan and Seth arrive just in time to present the egg to its new owner.
Marissa finds Trey alone in his room and presents him with an envelope of cash. It’s the money from the sale of the tea set (in other words, money from Kirsten who purchased her mother’s old tea set). Trey admits he screwed up. He just wanted to do it on his own, to prove himself to Ryan. Marissa tells him he doesn’t have to do it on his own. He thanks her and promises to pay her back.
