So I finally saw the movie.... and I can think of about three things that were like the book.
Let's start with Meryl Streep. She, of course, was brilliant. She didn't look at all what I pictured Miranda to look like when I first read the book, and then even when I knew what she was Miranda and read the book. Ikinda pictured Miranda as a prettier Ann Clouter. But I don't know who else could have pulled off the campy uber bitch other than Meryl. Which is such a cliche, but I really believe Meryl Streep lives up to the hype of how great an actress she is.
Moving on. Ann Hathaway. I don't like her. I thought maybe this movie would do for her what Garden State did for Natalie Portman and make me love her, or at least like her. It didn't, but she wasn't what ruined this movie for me.
It was NOTHING like the book. The Lily was a very minor character in the movie, yet was a major part of the book. She was a trampy drunk and because of her job Andy didn't even notice. It was Lily getting in an accident that made Andy finally quit her job.
Alex... oh I'm sorry Nate. Why the fuck did that change his name? Oh maybe because she had a different boyfriend in the movie. He was some wannabe chef... sorry that was Sammy in Everyone Worth Knowing the other Lauren Weisberger book Alex is a teacher.
Christain was an actual asshole and it wasn't just an act.
And did I mention that the plot was NOTHING like the book?!
There was no singing door man, there was no big production about getting coffee or getting Miranda the right meal. Miranda's husband dumped her instead of being a bi push over. There was no picture of Miranda as a devil were Andy looks at it and sees the sadness in Miranda's eyes and feels bad. Emily didn't not go to Paris because she had mono... Miranda chose Andy over Emily and Emily got hit by a car. WTF!
If I hadn't loved the book so much I think I would have found this movie a fun summer flick, but I think I'm too acttached to the book. When it comes out on DVD I'm going to have to give it a second chance and just try to enjoy it as a movie not a movie very very loosely based on a book.
And I think it's settled I can never see a Stephanie Plum movie if they make one... it'll be too much stress on me.
