"The problem concerning the freedom of human will arises from the incompatability of the very ancient idea that there is in the universe a principle of casuality to which all happenings are subject and the equally ancient intuitive conviction that our choices and decisions are made freely. For it would seem that, if the volitions leading to our actions are caused, they cannot be freely and spontaneously our own. It is then unreasonable that we should be held responsible for our acts or that we should be expected to have feelings of guilt or remorse for our wrongdoings. Thus, the free will problem is closely linked both to ideas of causality and of ethics and morals."
