AHHHHHHHHHHH hi everyone! I wish I could have the time to read all of your posts but I don't. It's 6:00 PM here on the 4th of July but you guys are all sleeping because it's 4:00 in the morning there.
But Kira and I FINALLLY found an internet cafe (after looking around like crazy) and I'm like about to cry out of excitement. Thailand has been amazing. I don't even know what to write because there's so much.
We landed at around 5:30 in the morning but it felt like it was 2:00 PM. We were literally hit by 90 degree, HUMID weather. I actually got over the jet lag fast (when it's 9:00 AM here it's 7:00 PM the night before there) because the 17 hour plane ride messed us up so much. Bangkok kind of reminded me of L.A, only with traffic that's literally stopped most of the time, and with crazy drivers that don't pay attention to lanes or make up their own lanes or drive in two at one time. We've been to a couple of temples, which were really cool. And this year they're celebrating the 60th anniversary of the King's reign, so there are signs everywhere celebrating it. At the Chaiboonma reunion they gave us the yellow polo shirts that everyone wears to celebrate it, which we were really excited about.
On Friday and Saturday nights Kira, Derek, and I went out with their cousins (who are all in their 20's and SUPER wealthy) to a street where all the tourists go (everyone here is German). It's kinda fun to go to places like that because it's pretty much a gathering of people from all over the world. On Friday we went into a bar and watched the Germany vs. Argentina game. It was reallllly really cool because there were people from all over the world coming together to watch a sports game, and most of the people weren't really rooting for one side.. we all just cheered when any side scored. Saturday night was the England vs. Portugal game, which we watched in another bar FILLED with English people. It was really fun, but it was definitely painful because of all the English boys crying. We saw Superman in a mall, which was SO much more high tech than any American mall I've been to, and towards the end (when he's falling..THE MOST IMPORTANT PART), the sound turned off and was replaced by cheesy Thai music. So we pretty much have no idea what happened. Oh and during the previews, we were supposed to stand up for a song that they played honoring the King, but we didn't know. The people in back of us had to tell us. It was definitely a "farang" (foreigners) moment.
On Sunday we went to a memorial service for Kira's grandparents, which was SOOO COOL. 5 monks came and chanted for like 40 minutes straight. It was really amazing to be there because I've never seen anything like it.
We came to Hua Hin yesterday, which is on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. We're staying at Kira's dad's cousin's condo that's part of a super nice hotel facility, so we (finally) got to eat an American style dinner AND breakfast. We've been eating Thai food this whole time, which is good, but after a while it all has a certain smell and taste to it.
I'm starting to get used to some things here, like the staring I get when we're not in a tourist place, or the constant hot and humid weather with the (very) occasional rain, or the elephants walking down the street, or the crazy driving, or the fried bugs that are sold on the street, or the almost deafening sound of frogs and crickets at night.
Sorry if this doesn't make sense but I'm trying to go as fast as I can. I miss you all and even know I don't know how I'm going to last a month without you, I'm sure I will because it truly is amazing here. Feel free to e-mail me because Kira and I are trying to find internet cafes wherever we go. Have a good 4th of July!!
