I'm trying to write a story and this is my first.
The genre is science fiction and thriller.
Please give me any feedback; all I need is people's opinion on it.
Thank you! :)
P.S. - This is just part one of my first chapter. If I get a lot of positive comments or if a lot of people like it, I might think about posting the second part.
Finch never knew what was going on, or at least what was happening. Supposedly he was never "informed." He was always the absent-minded brother, although he was the oldest. Franco was a little better. He tried to do everything the right way, and put all of his effort into it. But why is it that VON Grimm, the "adopted" sister of the family, is the only one with no description?
That day, VON Grimm had one of those "off" days at school. Luckily, school was already over. The only thing she looked forward to now was going home and meeting her two older brothers, Finch and Franco. Finch was the type of guy who never thought before he spoke. He always ended up getting into pathetic, pointless fights over nothing. Yet at the same time, Finch was also the role model. He was the oldest brother and he knew how to take care of everything, no matter what the situation. Franco was more of the sensitive type. He took care of gentle and small things, but wasn't the one to go to with big problems or situations. While on the other hand, VON Grimm was just a random little girl that they both considered their little sister. They found her on the side of the street during a rainy day with a gunshot wound on her right knee. As to how it got there, you will find out later.
VON Grimm finally arrives home after taking the bus home from school. All she wants to do now is rest.
Finch is already in the house since he did not work today, unlike Franco. Finch is sitting in the living room, looking at a men's magazine filled with bikini girls; typical Finch. He is caught off guard when he hears VON Grimm walking in through the front door.
"Finch!" VON Grimm calls, knowing that he is home.
As soon as Finch hears VON Grimm, he suddenly does not know what to do with the magazine in his hands; he never really thought beforehand. He was not the type of guy that was good at thinking. One of the things he did best was improvise.
Now, before I get off tangent here; Finch quickly slides the magazine underneath the couch he is sitting in, hoping that VON Grimm wouldn't see it. He is suddenly startled by VON Grimm's footsteps that are slowly approaching him, and he quickly stands up and off the couch. He turns around in an instant and sees VON Grimm right before his eyes. Just by the look of her face, he can tell that she has had a bad day.
But of course, it is not likely of Finch to express his feelings to someone else. In his words, "It's odd."
"What the hell are you doing here?" Finch harshly asks VON Grimm. You would think an older brother would be at least a little bit nicer.
"I live here..." VON Grimm confusedly says. "What are you doing here?”
Finch is beaten. “Same.”
VON Grimm turns around with pride, knowing that she beat Finch, something that does not happen often, and walks to the kitchen to get a snack from the refrigerator. But as she is doing so, she suddenly stops walking, remembering that she forgot to tell Finch one more little thing. She quickly turns around to face him.
“And one more thi-,” she says, suddenly stopping in the middle of her word. Finch is confused as to why, but when he notices that she is looking down at something that is on the ground underneath the couch, he quickly becomes very nervous.
“Uh…” Finch says, having no idea what to do.
Then, without thinking and of course, improvising, Finch quickly squats down, snatches the magazine off the ground, and hides it behind his back, as if he thinks VON Grimm will completely forget about it now - idiocy.
“At least I’m not gay,” he says, while trying to be funny.
“That’s sick,” VON Grimm complains.
After that little conflict, VON Grimm continues to do as she was before: to walk to the kitchen to get a snack. As she walks back to the kitchen, Finch quickly takes the magazine, runs to a large black flat-screen television on the other side of the living room, and roughly drops the magazine behind it; as if that is not a better place for hiding.
Once he is finished with his pointless action, he runs back towards VON Grimm, who is now in the kitchen, looking for something to eat inside the refrigerator.
“VON Grimm,” Finch calmly says to her.
“Yeah,” VON Grimm says as she finally finds something satisfying inside the refrigerator - a carrot.
Finch is a little disgusted by VON Grimm’s selection in a snack, for Finch absolutely despises all kinds of vegetables with a fiery hot passion of a thousand suns; just like a little baby. Ironic how I always have to compare him to something inferior.
“What I meant was… what are you doing back so early?” Finch asks.
“Didn’t you hear?” VON Grimm asks as she walks past him into a hallway in the house that leads to her room.
“Hear what?” Finch asks, following her.
“It was early release at our school.”
VON Grimm takes a left and walks into her room, with Finch following her. As VON Grimm enters, Finch stops just outside and leans on his right side on the threshold. Then VON Grimm turns around to face him, looking so happy all of a sudden with a big smile on her face.
“Guess what I got.”
“What?” Finch says, a little nervous it might be something completely useless, like that one time when she got a vibrator for Finch’s personal pleasure, even though he was straight. Actually, that thing came in handy. Finch passed it over to his girlfriend, who has enjoyed it ever since.
VON Grimm walks over to her bed in her room, reaches underneath her pillow, and takes out a CD.
“Another CD?” Finch asks, a little exasperated.
VON Grimm nods her head with pride while smirking; a common gesture that runs throughout the family.
“What’s Franco going to say?” Finch asks nervously.
“Where is Franco, anyways?” VON Grimm asks.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Franco loves his job. He works at it with much effort in pleasing his customers with the very finest; that is, as a bartender. He owns the small “Anarchic Bar” four blocks down with Finch and a very old and close friend, Brad. Today, he had the pleasure of having company and working alongside Brad, instead of on his own.
“Franco!” Brad yells from across the other side of the bar.
“Yeah!” Franco yells back, busy with mixing up drinks for a needy customer.
Brad walks across the bar, behind the counter, and towards Franco. He puts his arm over Franco’s shoulder as Franco is still busy with the drinks. Franco greets Brad with a nice, friendly smile.
“Hey, Brad.”
“What the hell are you still doing here?”
“Workin’. What does it look like?”
“Go home!” Brad yells as he snatches the drinks from Franco.
“But-”
“You were supposed to be home over an hour ago!”
“I’m just tryin’ to make some more money!” Franco fights back.
“Get out!”
Franco finally gives up, knowing that he has lost the fight; sad enough to admit, something he does often. “Thanks, man,” he says as he chuckles.
He leaves Brad to mix the rest of the drink as he leaves the bar. Later on, he drives his midnight blue, 1969 Chevy Impala to the house, anxiously waiting to meet Finch and VON Grimm once again.
“Finch! VON Grimm!” Franco yells as he enters the house through the front door.
He does not hear or see either of them, and this makes him a little worried, because most of the time, Finch and VON Grimm both do not know when to keep their mouths shut. Franco walks into the house, hoping that nothing is wrong; I guess you could call Franco the mother of the family. He always worries too much about the littlest things; it actually gets quite annoying after a while.
Franco walks through the hall into VON Grimm’s room. He sees her lying on the ground, sleeping (that’s right, she’s not dead) with a pair of headphones connected to a CD player over her ears. He sighs in relief after seeing that she is still alive, like anything would have happened to her in the first place, especially with Finch in the house.
I advise you not to get on Finch’s bad side, or else he will have the reaction of the Hulk. Oh boy, now I’m comparing the family to superheroes; at least it’s not something as inferior.
So you ask me, “If Finch is like the Hulk, then what about Franco and VON Grimm?”
Well, I would say Franco is more like the Flash. What can I say; he always acts like a speed addict. And well, VON Grimm, I’d compare her to, probably one of the most useless superheroes in my book. I’m not sure of his name, but all I know is that his “awesome” ability is to make bouncy balls come out of no where. I mean, when you are in trouble, let us say you are getting mugged, how is making bouncy balls appear from thin air going to save you? You think it will actually distract the mugger and that he will be thrilled with them like a little baby? He does not want to take home a bouncy ball; he wants to take home your money.
Oh no, I’m getting off topic here, again. Prior warning: I shall do this often.
Franco walks into the living room, hoping to see Finch somewhere. To his relief, Finch is lying on the couch in the living room eating a snack.
“Franco!” Finch yells with excitement.
Franco completely ignores his friendly greeting and goes straight to the problem.
“Did you get another CD for VON Grimm?” Franco asks, a little frustrated.
“What makes you think I got that for her?” Finch asks as he chuckles.
“So she got it on her own?”
Finch nods his head as Franco sighs.
“So how was work?”
“It was alright,” Franco says as he sits down on the couch next to Finch.
“You sure it was just… alright?” Finch asks, being doubtful and leaving Franco confused. “Because you were supposed to be home an hour ago.”
“I was just tryin’ to make some extra money.”
“What makes you think we need extra anything? We got everything we’ll ever need in this place.”
But for some odd reason, Franco doubted that.

Penn is sitting in front of his computer inside his laboratory with the lights dark and dim. Science and experiments were the only things that ever interested him. It was his favorite subject in school and the only one he ever really paid attention to. On the computer, he is looking at big and complex diagram of the human eye. His dream as a scientist was to make a remarkable finding. Right now, it was to find out how to change the human eye, so people could see in the dark naturally.
As he is studying the diagram, he suddenly gets an idea, picks up his cell phone that is lying next to the computer, and quickly dials a set of numbers, calling one of his most loyal friends, Chace.
“Hello,” Chace tiredly says over the phone.
“Chace?”
“Penn, do you have any idea what time it is?”
“Just listen to this. If I just fixed a part of the lens and iris, then maybe-”
“I hate to break it to you, Penn, but no one’s going to buy it.” Chace says as he cuts Penn off.
“Just hear me out. You’d be able to see in the dark, without any lights on.
“Penn, no one’s going to actually volunteer to do this.”
That lowered Penn’s self esteem, which was easy to do. Penn sighs with lack of confidence. But then he thinks differently about it.
“Then we’ll just have to find someone,” Penn says grimly.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finch and Franco are both enjoying one of their most favored hobbies; watching sports. They are watching a football game in the living room, sitting next to one another on the couch. While the boys are doing what they do best, (sitting still, watching television, and gaining some weight in the process) VON Grimm is taking a little pleasant stroll outside. VON Grimm was never a big fan of sports; she would prefer to do something else.
As she is taking a nice and quiet stroll outside, out of no where, Penn pulls up next to her while in his car.
“Hey, do you know where the nearest gas station is?” Penn asks politely, trying to seem nice as possible.
“Yeah, you just go straight for three more blocks and it should be on your left.”
“Yeah, but… I don’t want to get lost. You think you can come with, just in case?”
VON Grimm can already tell that something is suspicious about this; things like this do not happen everyday.
“I couldn’t have given you simpler directions…” VON Grimm says nervously.
“Yeah, but… just in case. Be a doll, won’t you?”
VON Grimm knows something is wrong. It was as if Penn was asking her to come with him, just for fun and kicks. She remembers many of the television programs and Finch’s long lectures of strangers, and how you should stay away from them at all costs.
“Stay away from all strangers, VON Grimm,” Finch would say.
“Why?”
“Because they’ll find out where you live, and they will rape you.”
“What if I want to get raped?” VON Grimm would jokingly ask.
“What are you smoking?! No one wants to get raped! Except for maybe Meg from “Family Guy”.”
But that was long ago. And this was now.
VON Grimm did not do anything else except start to walk forward. She did not make any more eye contact or anything. Penn was starting to become anxious.
“C’mon, please,” he said as he pulled up closer to her.
VON Grimm ignores his begging and keeps walking forward as if she heard nothing. Was this the right thing to do? Did she act in the right manner for this situation? Or was she just making things worse?
Penn suddenly slams his foot on the brakes, frustrated. No one has ever ignored him before. No one. Anyone. No one would dare to, for Penn had the worst temper that they had ever seen. Like when he was a child, at the age of nine, him and his older brother were fighting over a video game. His older brother wanted the video game, but Penn saw it first. After a little arguing, fighting, and yelling here and there, Penn ends up taking a golf club from his father’s office, and swings it across his older brother’s head - blood gushing everywhere. His brother became unconscious, had to go to the hospital, and was in a coma for quite some time. But that was when he was nine; that was fifteen years ago; but that does not mean his temper got any better.
Penn knows better than to think VON Grimm does not have the slightest hint of what he is trying to do.
Not knowing what to do, inside his head he thinks to himself: “I can’t just leave her now… she already know I’m up to something…”
Penn decides to go for it. He slams his right foot on the gas pedal as the engine roars. As soon as VON Grimm hears the car coming, she quickly looks back and sees that Penn is heading for her. She turns back around and starts running straight, fast.
“Hey!” Penn yells out the front window.
Penn presses down harder on the gas pedal, trying to keep up with VON Grimm. She is now running as fast as she can, hearing her heartbeat in her ears.
Penn knows that there is no way to get VON Grimm while he is still in the car. So he quickly stops the car, opens the door, and runs for her. VON Grimm turns around, sees him running for her, and is now running for her life.
Why was he running for her? What did he want?
But those were things that could be taken care of later with Finch and Franco. Right now, she had to lose him.
But all of a sudden, her feet feel so heavy; every step is like lifting up a large boulder. She becomes very tired as large beads of sweat roll down the side of her face.
She gets a very unnerving feeling; she cannot lose him. He is much faster than her; he will eventually catch up to her, and do whatever he pleases and wants to do to her… or worse - her body.
As she is thinking of these very uneasy and unpleasant things, not concentrating on her steps or her running, no matter how heavy her feet feel, Penn finally catches up to her. He takes all his body weight and tackles her down to the ground. Before you know it, they are both rolling on top of each other on the asphalt; VON Grimm fighting for her life while Penn is fighting for her.
Penn’s violent side kicks in; as they are rolling and fighting in the middle of the street, Penn grabs a hold of VON Grimm’s delicate hair with his left hand, musters up all his strength, and slams the left side of her face onto the asphalt as hard as he possibly can.
Penn hears a loud “crack” as VON Grimm stops moving. After noticing that she is no longer moving, Penn quickly gets up and frantically looks around, checking to see if anyone saw the incident. Luckily for him, no one was around. He looks back down at her motionless and lifeless body lying in the middle of the street.
He never meant to go this far; he never meant to hurt her. He thought it would be simple; nothing like this.
Penn slowly squats down, gently picks up VON Grimm’s body, and casually walks back to his car with it - as if he has done this a thousand times.
Before Penn’s violent action, while VON Grimm was still trying to fight for her life, all these thoughts were going through her head: What was he going to do with her? Did he want to hurt her? What did he want from her? And Finch’s favorite: Was he going to rape her?
Or was she just a random victim for his gruesome experiment?
