Ch 02
Bam stood in the lunch line, waiting, just like everyone else, to get his plate of goop and sit down. The large, gruff looking lunch lady took his plate and scooped a pile of grey slop onto it. Bam’s stomach churned at the thought of what it was supposed to be. He finally moved on, grabbing an apple and a chocolate milk box. He held onto his trey and looked around the large cafeteria, trying to spot Sarah. The cafeteria buzzed with the constant foreign chatter of highschool students as Bam slowly took a few steps to the side to continue looking.
“Bam!” Bam whipped his head to the left, following his name. Then he saw Sarah, standing on her chair waving her arms in the air like a lunatic, trying to get his attention. He chuckled and quickly walked over to her, thankful to have a friend.
He made it to the table, noticing three other people sitting and talking away amongst each other. He set his trey down and put his backpack under the table, finally sitting down on the plastic stool.
“Hey,” he nodded to Sarah.
“Hi, oh I want you to meet my friends.” The other three people looked up, smiling at Bam. Sarah pointed to a thin boy, on the other side of the table, who had light skin dark short hair and green eyes, ‘not as brilliant as Ville’s though,’ Bam thought. “This is Jesse, He’s a junior like us and is really good at math, just in case you need any help.” Jesse nodded his head towards Bam as Sarah moved on, pointing to a girl sitting rather closely to Jesse. She had long curly brown hair and dark eyes. “This Is Marta, she’s Jesse’s girlfriend. They’ve been together for almost four years. Pretty amazing.” Marta smiled, and Bam chuckled at Sarah. “And that,” she pointed to the boy who was sitting next to Bam, he was a little more full and had dark hair that seemed to stick out everywhere, grey eyes, and a nose ring “That is Mikko. Although we call him Mige. Mige is nineteen. He had to be held back at school because his parents used to move constantly when he was younger. But he’s cool nonetheless.” Bam smiled at Mige who nodded his head at Bam. “And everyone, this is Brandon Margera, the new kid. The one I was telling you about.” Everyone exchanged their hi’s and hello’s. “It’s okay, they all speak English pretty well,” Sarah whispered to Bam. He exhaled in relief.
“You guys can call me Bam. It’s a nickname. I think it fits me better than Brandon,” he rolled his eyes. They all giggled.
“So, you are from the States,” Mige stated, spooning some grey slop into his mouth. “That’s pretty cool. I used to live there, when I was younger.”
“Here we go again, Mige telling stories of his childhood moving days,” Jesse rolled his eyes. Marta playfully slapped his arm, causing Bam and Sarah to chuckle.
“You’re just jealous because I’ve been to exotic places and you haven’t.” Mige shot back.
“The States is not an exotic place!” Jesse shot back. “No offense,” he offered to Bam.
“None taken. I know It’s not the best and most exotic place to be...trust me, I’ve lived there for my entire life,” Bam got his plastic spoon, and swirled it around in the grey goop that was in his plate. “What the hell is this?” He asked, when it bubbled. “Is this even edible?” He stared at it.
“It’s quite good actually,” Mige stated, spooning another mouthful into his mouth. “Tastes like...chicken.”
“I doubt it,” Bam cringed. He grabbed the apple and took a bite. “Hey Sarah, what’s up with that guy...the one that tripped me in art, Ville? He’s in my history and math class too. And in math, the only empty seat was the one directly in front of him.” Sarah chuckled.
“Lucky you,”
“No way man, he’s like the devil or something. In math he kept throwing small balled up pieces of paper at me. And then he would lean forward and whisper weird things in my ear. When I would turn around, he would act like nothing happened. Now I don’t speak Finnish that well, but I know enough to know he was saying some really nasty things...” Bam took another bite of his apple.
“I don’t know. He’s always getting into fights.” Sarah sipped some of her milk.
“Yeah, you might think he’d be really wimpy, because he has small physics, but he is very strong, isn’t that right Mige?” Jesse added, looking in Mige’s direction.
“What do you mean?” Bam asked, turning to Mige.
“Ville and Mige use to be really good friends, a couple of years ago.” Sarah said. “But one day, Ville started to hang out with the wrong crowed and they didn’t like Mige. So to be cool, Ville started treating him badly. They even fought one day,” Sarah added.
“That fucking sucks man,” Bam looked back at Mige.
“You have no idea.” He stared at his plate, playing with the left over slop on it.
“You better watch out, and don’t get him mad.” Marta chimed in. “He’ll beat you up if you even look at him the wrong way.”
“I’m not afraid of him,” Bam spat.
“No really, you should be careful.” Sarah warned. “Because he’s older, and taller than you. And he might really do a number on you.”
“Nah, I used to do worse shit back home. I can handle him.” Bam nodded his head.
“Well don’t say we didn’t warn you,” Marta warned. The five sat in silence for a while, listening to the buzz of the cafeteria. Then out of nowhere a loud crash sounded at the other end of the cafeteria. The students went silent and everyone turned their attention to two boys, in the middle, yelling at each other. Bam recognized the tall, thin, dressed all in black one as Ville. They argued in Finnish, the smaller boy moving away timidly from Ville. Bam tried looking around the other students to get a good view and finally decided to stand on his chair. Ville reached out and pushed the kid to the ground, laughing evilly when the kid fell on the floor. Then some of the male teachers and the principal came over, grabbing Ville by the shoulder’s to escort him out.
Just before he was turned away, Ville caught Bam’s stare, and shot him a teasing smirk. Then he was escorted out and more than likely to the principals office.
“Fucking cunt man, why did the kid let him push him?” Bam shot out, enraged as he sat back down on his chair. The cafeteria went back to it’s normal buzz, probably talking about what had just happened.
“Most people are afraid of him,” Jesse answered, turning back around.
“Well someone should teach him a fucking lesson.” Bam huffed, taking a sip of his chocolate milk.
“It’s no use. He won’t listen to anyone,” Sarah added, “not even family.” Bam raised an eyebrow at Sarah who pointed to Jesse.
“Family?” Bam asked, looking back and forth between the two.
“Yeah, I’m the younger brother.” he smiled awkwardly. “We use to be really close...until,” he trailed off.
“That sucks, being a brother to a dick like him. Man if Jess were to ever treat me like that I’d kick his ass.”
“Who’s Jess?” Marta asked, looking at Bam.
“He’s my older brother. He’s here with the family for a few months before he starts college, and he’s back at the States.” Bam stuck his spoon in the middle of the uneaten slop, making it stand straight up. Just then the bell chimed, announce everyone back to class. The five slowly got up, groaning and getting their backpacks. Everyone threw their trash away and started walking out of the cafeteria.
“Hey, Bam.” Bam turned around to Jesse. “You look like someone who skates, would you like to go to the skate park after school? All of us go there to hang out.” Jesse walked next to Bam waiting for his answer.
“Hell yeah man. I thought I was gonna go into skate withdrawals or something...but that would be awesome. I do have to ask Ape though.”
“Ape?” Sarah asked, catching up to Bam.
“Yeah, Ape is my mom. She’s picking me up after school.”
“Alright, we’ll meet you in the front, at the bottom of the stairs. Good luck in class!” Jesse waved and he and Marta disappeared through the crowed.
“I’m off this way, later” Mige announced, walking in the opposite direction in the hallway.
“So what do you have next?” Sarah asked, taking Bam's schedule out of his hands. “Uh-oh, Gym. Good luck with that one.”
“What? Why good luck? They aren’t gonna make us go swimming naked right?” Bam raised an eyebrow.
“Nah...but your best friend is in that class. Have fun!” Sarah waved and took off into one of the classrooms. Bam stood in the hallway, thinking, ‘best friend?’ Then he groaned, rolling his eyes.
“If Ville says even one fucking thing to me....”
