----- Next morning ----- Bam
“Bye Ape! Bye Phil!” I said as I ran out the door. It was 8:05am. I was already late to school. I grabbed my skateboard, hopped on, and sped down the street. I loved skating, it gave me some strange sense of control and freedom. And it provided me with a rush that I’ve yet to find anywhere else.
Although I must admit, last night… with Ville. That was quite the rush. I was still confused about what had happened. How much of that encounter had been the alcohol and how much of the sexuality had he actually sincerely applied himself?
I rode down the sidewalk and was now approaching the school. But before I knew it, something hard hit me in the back and sent me flying off of my board. I fell to the ground and skidded along the pavement.
“Ouch!” I yelled. I looked over to see Raab who was on the ground, rolling around laughing, practically in tears. I turned to the side to see that what he’d thrown at me had been his backpack full of books.
“You fucker,” I said giggling.
“Oh that was priceless! You hit the ground with this thud,” he said breaking to laugh, “and then you rolled,” he kept snickering, “and then, haha, you looked around like ‘What the fuck just happened?’ - oh Bam, it was great. You should’ve seen yourself.”
“Yeah, I bet,” I mumbled.
I grabbed my book bag and handed Raab his, slamming it against his chest. “Come on, we’re late. The principle will have a fit if either of us graces his office with our presence one more time,” I said.
We gathered ourselves and continued down the sidewalk.
“So Raab, I met this really weird guy. Get this name. His name is Ville Valo,” I chuckled. “And he’s like, totally femme. I mean the dude wears makeup around his house,” I said. Maybe if I could make this seem like I was totally casual about it, I’d actually relax over the whole thing.
“I swear that name… what was it? Ville Valo? That sounds so familiar. Hey Bam - I think that he’s a singer for some band. Oh what are they called. IT? No… that’s not right. THEM? It’s some word like that. That’s weird man, how’d you meet this guy.”
Well I wasn’t going to tell the truth that while spying on him I had had an accident with some gardening tools, “Oh, he saw me in my yard and invited me over for a beer.”
“The guy can get us beer?” Raab said, his eyes gleaming.
“Relax dude, I hardly know the guy. I’m not gonna be asking him to buy us booze just yet.”
We walked in the front doors of the school, only to find the principle right inside.
“Brandon Margera. Chris Raab. Late again?” he said, questioning us, but fully knowing the answer.
“Yes,” we replied simultaneously.
“Margera, in my office. Now.”
“But-“ I protested.
“Just come.”
Raab glanced at me one more time then jogged off to class. I followed the principle into his office. It was so dull. A plain dark brown desk with one photograph, a computer and a pencil sharpener on it. He slowly sat down and folded his arms across each other and set them on the top of his desk.
“Brandon. I’ve really had enough of this. I’ve tried everything. What’s next? A truancy officer?”
I shrugged. What was I supposed to say? Yes sir. Please send someone to my home every morning to make sure that I come to this horribly boring building on a daily basis, on time.
“I’ll tell you what. Don’t even bother with today. I’m going to call your mother, April, was that her name? I’m going to tell her that I’m sending you home and that you’re suspended for two days. Maybe that will give you some time to think things over.”
I pretended to be upset, “But sir, I can’t do that. My mother-“
“That’s just too bad Mr. Margera. Now go. I’ll phone your mother while you head home.”
I got up and pretended to sulk while walking out of the room. However as soon as I reached the hallway I jumped up.
“Yes!” I shouted.
Then I grabbed my board and skated out the front door. Anyone who’s ever suspended a student is an idiot. Come on. He just gave me a couple days of vacation. And what would Ape do? Complain. That was about it.
Freedom, at least for a little while, was mine.
---- Same time ---- Ville
“So what’s your name again?” Linde asked the young man.
“Ryan Dunn. But you can just call me Dunn,” he said.
Apparently he knew Bam. I guess that they all hung around Bam’s house most of the time.
We were standing in the sun out on the front porch of the house, just talking and having a beer. I noticed Bam was skating down the road. I shouted out to him as he neared my home, “Bam!”
He put his foot down, stopping his skateboard, flipping it up then pulled it up against his side.
“Hey guys. Hey Dunn, what the hell are you doing here?” he said.
“Eh, skipped school. Came over to see if you did the same,” Dunn replied.
“Yes. Well no. I tried to go. But Raab knocked me off my board and made me really late. Then the principle got pissed and said I was suspended, as my punishment. Sucks doesn’t it? You know, not having to go to school for two days!”
“Oh that rocks!” Dunn replied.
Linde and I just giggled to ourselves. We remembered days like this back in high school. But that was quite a while ago for us.
“Why don’t you two come inside, get out of the heat?” I suggested to Bam and Dunn.
They agreed and followed me indoors. I seated them in the living room and tossed them a couple of brewskies.
Linde walked over to the couch that Dunn sat on and plopped himself next to him, so I did the same with Bam. I wrapped my arm around the couch above his shoulders and looked over at him. He was nervous again.
I lit a cigarette then put it up to my lips. I took a deep, long inhale. I looked at Bam and grinned. I exhaled, blowing the smoke in his face. He waived his hand and coughed.
“How have you been?” I asked playfully.
He cleared his throat. “Not too bad,” he said.
Linde bit his lip then looked at me. I nodded at him. Just then, he turned sideways, “Hey… Dunn. Want to take our beers and go for a dip in the pool? I could sure use some cooling off.”
“Sure, definitely,” Dunn said. The two of them walked out the back doors.
I moved in closer to Bam and hung my arm around his neck. “Just us.” I said smiling.
“Mm…” he replied cautiously.
I set down my beer and put my hand on his thigh.
“So, tell me more about yourself,” I said to him.
“Um, I thought that I told you everything about me last night?” he questioned.
“No, I mean about you. What do you want with life? What really goes through your head when you think during the day?”
He paused, “I don’t know. I guess that I want to make it. I want people to see me. I want both the public that I don’t know to recognize me, and I want to find someone, a single person, that I can be with. And trust me, there’s no one I can relate to around here.”
He was so naïve. Just opening the door for me to move right in.
“No one?” I asked, I took my finger and traced it in little circles on his thigh.
He took a deep breath, then slowly sighed.
“Oh, I think that I could change that.” I said. I grinned, this was playing out just how I’d wanted it to.
