hello sweethearts.

i'm back. with a story. i know, you should all be exceedingly amazed. it's not the best i've written but oh well. I've broken my foot and im stuck in my hosue and had nothing better to do.

Disclaimer: *sings mel's disclaimer song* yeah. DO DK NH. k? The lyrics in italics are from the song Run by Snow Patrol. There is also a small section of lyrics from Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton.

They sat in the car, silent. As silent as they had been for the past 2 hours; silent as they had never been before. The road stretched on forever, fence posts kept passing the windows in a blur. Fields blended into fields, trees became a mass of blurred greens. Ville’s eyes watched the scenery go past without seeing it; Bam drove the car with his eyes fixed straight ahead, not really seeing where he was going. The road was empty anyways.

I’ll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done

Things had been fine just 2 hours ago. Things had been normal 2 hours ago. 2 hours ago, they were just peachy. They were joking, they were laughing; they were the best friends in the world. Bam often referred to Ville as the only real friend he had. Ville depended on Bam for the kind of friendship he didn’t have anywhere else. They each knew what other was thinking, they could finish each other’s sentences, they knew what to say and what to do and they could have the time of their lives without needing anyone else. Inseparable, incorrigible… indestructible. The best of friends.

2 hours ago, they were in West Chester, preparing for the road trip they were taking. It was a chance to get away and spend some quality time with the most important person without any interruptions.

“Bam, you ready?”
“I’m coming!” Bam had a suitcase full of stuff just to amuse them with, a suitcase full of clothes, and 2 suitcases of food and drink. Ville had just 1 suitcase, but it was stuffed full of clothes and movies.
“Lets go then.”
“BYE APE!” The scrambled into the car and both heaved a sigh of relief as soon as they got out of the driveway.
“Ready for this?” Bam asked.
“You have no idea.” They smiled and Bam drove on. Comfortable silence settled over them for about 5 minutes. Bam was deep in thought.
“You know… I don’t think I’d be able to do this with anyone but you.” He turned to look at Ville, who smiled.
“Me neither.”
“I think I’d just get pissed off.” Ville nodded. “But you never piss me off. Not really, anyways.” Ville smiled again, and squeezed his friend’s hand.
“I’m glad.” Bam nodded. He was in a thoughtful mood. Not something that happened often.
“You know… I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“I dunno what I’d do without you either, Bam. But may I ask why you’re being so serious all of a sudden?”
“I dunno. I was just thinking, you know?”
“I didn’t know you did that very often.”
“HEY!” Ville grinned and kissed Bam’s cheek to show him he was just kidding. Bam turned, smiling, to look at his best friend - he meant to just look over his friend quickly, but something in those green eyes caught him. The car slowed, stopped. They sat staring at each other, each getting lost in the other’s eyes. Bam felt his stomach sinking; Ville’s skin started crawling. They sat looking at each other for 10 minutes, until Ville couldn’t stand it anymore and coughed, turning to look out the window. Bam’s eyes dropped to the gear stick and he started the car again, his troubled thoughts swarming around his head.

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here

“Bam…” Ville tried to break the silence in the car, his hand reaching for his friend’s. Bam shook his head, and Ville sighed and leaned back in his seat. Bam turned to watch him: his eyes were closed and he was shaking a little, as he always did when he was being tormented by something. Bam was sick of silence now. He was going to ignore the feeling at the pit of his stomach, and they were going to have fun. Who knew when they would be able to do something like this again? He reached over and ruffled Ville’s hair.
“HEY! NO TOUCHING OF THE HAIR!” Ville freaked out and pulled down the mirror in the sunshade, desperately running his fingers through his hair to fix it.
“Jesus, calm down.”
“You. Touched. The Hair.” Ville glared at him, suppressing a grin. The silence broken, the rest of the car journey went smoothly. They joked around, screwed around - Bam nearly killed them a couple times, according to Ville, who shrieked every time a tire left the road.

They finally reached their destination: Middle Of Nowhere, Ohio. Cows, corn, barns, and scarecrows were the only things they could see now. Bam had rented out a cottage and they were going to stay there for a week. All by themselves. It was Bam’s remedy to the immense stress that Ville had been under, and was also intended to remove the stress that he himself was feeling. When Ville had called Bam up in tears and almost had an asthma attack, Bam knew it was time they both took a break.

So they were in Ohio. The middle of nowhere, where no-one could possibly find them, where no-one would even bother looking. They could just be alone together and have fun and get away from the lives that were driving them both crazy. It was a tiny cottage: one bedroom, a small kitchen, a living room, and a bathroom. But it was all they needed. Ville dumped his stuff in the bedroom and claimed his side of the bed. Bam pulled all of his suitcases in, and fell back on the bed too. They lay there for a little while, just watching each other.
“C’mere,” said Ville, pulling Bam into a hug. They lay snuggled up together as only best friends can, enjoying the silence that surrounded them, and yet, something in both of them was sinking further and further as the minutes ticked past.

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you can not hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

“I missed you,” whispered Ville, after they had been lying for 10 minutes. Bam squeezed him.
“Missed you too.” Bam pulled the frail man tighter into his arms; his heart was almost bursting. Ville had had a rough time of it the past few months; he was skinnier than usual, and Bam had received quite a few drunken phone calls declaring that there was no point for Ville to keep living and that the end was nigh.
“Thank you for this, Bam.”
“I’m always here, Ville. You know I am.”
“I love you.” Bam smiled. Ville said this a lot.
“Love you too.”
“In a platonic sense, of course.” Bam grinned.
“Of course.” But they both felt that sinking feeling again. That feeling that something, just something somewhere, was not quite right anymore. Ville started singing softly, a song that always brought tears to Bam’s eyes.
“Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven? Would it be the same, if I saw you in Heaven? I must be strong, and carry on, cuz I know, I don’t belong, here in heaven.” Bam watched tears well up in Ville’s eyes and held his friend’s head to his chest.
“Shh. What’s wrong?”
“I’m … scared… I guess.” Bam hugged him closer.
“Of what?” Ville looked up and caught Bam’s eyes. The gaze was so deep, so meaningful, that Bam could only stand it for a few seconds.
“Um… do you want something to eat or something?” Ville shook his head.
“No thanks.”
“Okay… I’m just gonna… go grab some chips. Or something.” He needed to get out of there, away from Ville. He couldn’t breathe around him anymore, and he didn’t know why. Ville nodded, taking his iPod out and snuggling further into the blankets, watching Bam’s retreating back a little ruefully.
