Chapter 5 Chapter 6
It had been well over a day and a half since Manny and the boys had started towards Sector A. Ville’s legs hurt so badly, because Manny would not allow them to stop out in the open. They had to continue until they found some makeshift shelter, like an abandoned home or even a large vehicle. But, unfortunately, Manny had informed them that they wouldn’t be finding much shelter until they finally got to the boundaries of Sector A, which probably wouldn’t be reached until late that night. Oh, such cruel fate this was that they weren’t allowed to stop for rest, food, or drink.
“Ville,” Jonne whimpered lightly beside him. He was taking two steps to keep up with every one of his steps, and he was continuously stumbling over roots, overgrown weeds, and even his own feet. “Ville, I need a break,” he stated between heavy breaths.
“I know, Jonne. It won’t be long, now,” he promised, hoping that would get his friend’s spirits up.
“Oh, Ville…You said that at sundown! Can we please take a break?” he begged.
“Absolutely not,” Manny said over his shoulder, shooting a glare of warning at the two. “It’s way too dangerous at night to stop for any reason. You’re just going to have to tough it out.” Manny turned his attention back to what was in front of him, recalling the trail he hadn’t traveled in years.
Ville and Jonne walked for a bit longer, Ville feeling more and more guilty about making Jonne walk with every stumble he made. Finally, he grabbed his friend’s wrist and stopped him. He knelt down in front of him. “Climb on my back,” he offered.
“What?” Jonne asked. “I’ll just put extra weight on you and tire you out quicker,” he said. “I’d feel too guilty.”
“Just climb on my back before we get yelled at again,” Ville demanded. Jonne hesitated for a moment, but climbed on his back, wrapping his arms and legs around Ville securely. Ville stood up, then caught up with Manny, who was still in his own little world. Jonne wasn’t heavy at all, so he wasn’t really any inconvenience to Ville..
Manny suddenly stopped, looking around at where he was. Ville looked around as well, though it was hard to tell anything was there without any light. Manny nodded, then turned to face Ville and Jonne.
“I’m sorry boys, but this is as far as I dare go,” he stated. Ville blinked at Manny in disbelief. He was seriously going to leave the two boys alone at night without any protection?
“You have got to be kidding,” Ville said. He looked around again, now seeing potential dangers lurking out there in the dark. He pulled his bottom lip between his teeth, not sure what he was going to do. What if something did attack them as soon as Manny left? Jonne was of no use, and Ville was sure he couldn’t run very fast with him on his back. “You have to take us a little farther, at least,” Ville said.
Manny shook his head, looking down at the ground. “There’s no way I’m going back into that place. Not after what they did to my family. It’s all on you, now. Be strong,” he said, reaching up and patting Ville on the shoulder. “But,” he added, looking Ville in the eye now, “I must warn you about the people there. If they don’t look your age, don’t go near them. Citizens are all older, and will recognize a younger person like you in a crowd. They’ll turn you in if they spot you. Oh, and don’t, under any circumstances, go near some one who’s well-dressed. They are Cupids, and Cupids are the outside security. They, also, will turn you in to the Project in a heartbeat. Do you understand?”
Ville and Jonne both nodded in unison. Manny dug into one of his numerous pouches, handing them both some food and a canteen of water. “In case you need it,” he stated. “Just don’t stop for any reason. Eat as you walk. Sector A is in that direction, maybe another mile or two,” he said, pointing his finger in a general direction ahead of the three of them.
The two boys watched as their guide walked in the opposite direction, slowly fading out of sight. Ville’s heart began to race as realization hit him. There was still at least another mile to walk, and they had never been to this place before. They would surely get lost before they reached their destination. And, if they never got to the Sector, how were they supposed to find food or water? They would certainly die in this vast, barren field.
“Ville, what’s wrong?” Jonne asked into his ear. Ville blinked out of his terrifying thoughts and glanced over his shoulder at his friend.
“N-Nothing,” he lied. He began walking in the direction that Manny had pointed in, hoping he wouldn’t get too far off track. Everything looked the same around Ville, especially since the field was empty, save for the overgrown weeds and the occasional tree they would pass. He tried to keep his mind positive, telling himself that they would find people soon - trustworthy people that would help them out.
He opened the lid of the canteen and took a swallow of water, handing the container up to his friend, who gratefully accepted it. He didn’t want to admit it, but Jonne was getting rather heavy on his back. But, he didn’t know if Jonne was able to walk much more on his thin, worn-down legs. Ville would occasionally stop and adjust his friend on his back in attempt to make the traveling a bit easier, but it would only last a few minutes before he had to readjust him. It was quickly tiring Ville. He was soon taking in quick, shallow breaths just to keep up with his racing heart.
“Ville, I can see something!” Jonne said gleefully, pointing a thin finger towards a small, yellow light in the far distance. Ville squinted and focused on it. So, it wasn’t just a hallucination. There really was light there! That gave Ville a boost of adrenaline, picking up speed towards the uplifting light. But, his energy was soon sapped completely, and his vision began to blur. He slumped over slightly, hoping to catch his breath enough to keep walking.
“What’s the matter, Ville?” Jonne asked.
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Ville lied between deep breaths.
“I knew it! I knew I’d wear you down!” Jonne said. He slid down off of Ville’s back, taking slow steps to get a good look at Ville. “Here, there’s a little left in the canteen,” he offered, holding up the water container. Ville took it appreciatively, downing what little water was left in it. He let out a sigh after he was finished, dropping the empty canister to the ground.
“I’m alright. Let’s go,” he said, standing into an upright position. He took a few wobbly steps before he collapsed onto the ground, exhausted.
“Oh my God! Ville!” Jonne shouted.
“I’ll be okay here. Just go get some help from that house,” Ville demanded. Jonne took a few small steps backward, unsure of what to do. “I said go, damn it!” Ville shouted. Jonne squeaked slightly at his raised voice, then ran the other way to find help.
Jonne pounded on the old wooden door for a long time, not getting a response. “Help me, please!” his little voice shouted into the door. The tattered curtains in the window by the door shifted, and a pair of blue eyes looked out. They disappeared, then the door opened slowly, showing an older lady, about five foot five with blonde hair standing there.
“What’s the matter, dear?” she asked gently. Jonne pointed in the direction that he came from, trying his best at saying his friend was back there.
“Ville! He’s…He might be…Help!” he said frantically. The blonde lady held up a hand to calm Jonne.
“Slow down dear. Who are you talking about?” she asked.
“Ville! My friend! He collapsed out there! He needs help,” Jonne said, still pointing in Ville’s general direction. The lady’s eyes shifted from Jonne to the outdoors, searching through what she could see.
“Hold on, dear. I’ll get some one to help you,” she offered. She closed the door, leaving it slightly ajar, and Jonne could hear her calling through the house for some one. After a moment, she returned with a taller man behind him. “Jess here will help you,” she stated. The man stepped through the door, putting a coat on and pulling the hood over his head. Odd. It wasn’t cold out here at all. Jonne shrugged it off, leading the man over to where Ville had collapsed.
Dani sighed in disappointment. He and Bam had been searching through the market, and through the rest of the Sector to see if they could catch the two boys that had escaped the building a few days ago, but no such luck. He had his mind set up for this long, convoluted chase scene, and he would get his hands on that pretty blonde boy he had seen on that large television screen. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to turn that boy in. He found that one to be a beautiful person, indeed. But the brunette, he would surely turn in for at least half the compensation, no problem.
But, they walked home, empty handed once again. Dani was dissatisfied with this trip, knowing the adults of the house were surely going to yell at them for staying out so late and not even coming home with food. Dani shrugged it off. It would be the usual lecture until he was finally allowed to return to his room, where he could be by himself.
“Whoa!” Dani heard Bam shout just before he heard the sound of a loud thump. He looked over his shoulder and found his companion on the ground.
“What happened?” he asked. Bam untangled his foot from what he tripped over; the strap of a water canteen. Where the hell did that come from? Did some one follow the two of them out here yesterday when they ran from the Cupids? Dani glanced over both his shoulders, inspecting the area around them. He didn’t catch any other sign of anyone around them, so he turned his attention back to Bam.
“How the hell did this get out here?” Bam asked, rubbing the back of his head as he looked the canteen over.
“Who the hell cares? Let’s go,” Dani said. He really did care, he just didn’t want to hang around to find out who had left the thing lying around. If the person realized they lost it, they would surely be back for it. He helped Bam up to his feet, walking the rest of the way to their house, which was lit up like Broadway in the 2000’s.
“What the hell is going on here?” Dani mumbled to himself as he reached for the knob on the door. He opened it and stepped in, finding Bam’s mother in a frenzy, running back and forth through the house, grabbing various things on each trip. He closed the door behind him and Bam, making enough noise to have some one notice that they were back.
“Oh, thank God the two of you are back,” Bam’s mother said when she looked over to see what that noise was. “I need one of you to run to the creek and fetch some water.”
Dani wasn’t about to go. He wanted to know what had Bam’s mother so upset. He was worried that maybe one of his sisters had fallen ill or something. He walked across the front room to the open doorway where the two families had crowded around. He saw both of his sisters there, and his little brother, so he relaxed slightly. But he was still curious as to what was going on.
“What’s happening in there?” he asked to any one who would answer, since he couldn’t see over the small group of people that had crowded around the open doorway.
“A boy came knocking on our door about an hour ago, begging us to help him and his friend out. His friend’s in pretty bad shape. April says he’s exhausted and dehydrated, and that he should rest for a while.”
Dani was curious now. He pushed through the two families that had congregated around the doorway, making his way into what he realized was Bam’s room. He looked around and found Bam’s mother leaning over the bed. There was an obvious outline of some one in the bed, and the person wasn’t short, for sure. April, Bam’s mother, rubbed an old cloth across the person’s forehead, giving Dani a quick glance at who was in the bed. He looked young, from what Dani could see. His curious eyes traveled from the bed to the rest of the room. His heart stopped when he saw what was standing in the far corner.
There he was. That beautiful blonde that was on display on the large television in the market not but a few days ago. There was no way that finding them could be this easy! Those big, worried blue eyes tore themselves away from his bedridden friend, and looked up at the crowd that had jammed the doorway. They focused right on Dani, who simply stared back with a mix of awe and disbelief.
“Coming through,” Bam’s voice broke through the silence. He pushed past Dani and walked up next to his mother, offering the bowl of water to her. She smiled and kissed him on the forehead, then dipped a cup into the large bowl, offering it to the boy in Bam’s bed. There was a sudden gasp that escaped from Bam’s lips as he looked at who was lying there. He quickly turned around and gazed at Dani in shock. His movements caused some of the water to slosh from the bowl and onto the floor, making a loud splashing sound. April looked over her shoulder.
“Be careful with that, Bam,” she said before turning her attention back to the boy in the bed. Bam acted as if he didn’t hear her. He continued to gape at Dani, silently saying that the boys they were searching for were in their own house.
‘I know,’ Dani thought back to him, turning his gaze back to the cute little blonde, who had gotten up to look at his friend closely. He was saying sweet little things to him, probably to comfort him. Dani turned around and pushed himself back through the crowd, making his way to his own room.
He closed his door gently behind him, finding it dark save for the light shining in through the window from the half-moon. He found his lantern and quickly lit it, setting it on his nightstand before flopping on his bed. He didn’t know what to do, now that the boys were perfectly in his grasp. He decided it would be best to think it over in the morning, after he had gotten some rest.
He kicked off his boots and lay in his bed, trying his best to make himself sleep, though it seemed impossible when the image of that beautiful blonde kept appearing on the back of his eyelids. He puffed out a breath, then rolled on his side, trying his best to think of other things until he finally drifted off to sleep.
“M-Mom…Where am I supposed to sleep?” Bam asked, staring down at the brunette that was sleeping peacefully in his bed. He couldn’t help but stare - the boy was gorgeous! That brown hair that adorned such beautiful, loose curls, which framed his face so perfectly. His skin was so pale, and looked so delicate. It took a lot for Bam to keep his hands to himself at the sight.
“You can sleep on the couch tonight,” his mother offered. Bam groaned at the thought. That dusty old couch was so lumpy and uncomfortable. Just thinking about sleeping on it made Bam’s back hurt. His mother threw her hands up in the air in defeat. “It’s either the couch or the floor. Make your choice,” she stated.
With that, she walked out of his room, leaving him alone with a sleeping beauty and a dozing blonde companion. Bam couldn’t help but grin when he saw the little blonde boy sitting in the chair with his head leaning on the bed as he slept. It was cute how concerned he was for his friend. But, at the same time, Bam was worried for the two of them. He didn’t know what Dani would decide to do with them in the morning.
He sighed, blowing out the lantern and exiting his room, leaving the door slightly ajar for them. He flopped onto the couch in the front room, curling up as much as he could and trying his damnedest to get comfortable. With a disgusted sigh, he decided his current position was going to do, and closed his eyes.
