“Dunn, move your ass or I swear I’m leaving you here in Finland!” Bam Margera shouted over his shoulder to his friend as he made his way down a busy Helsinki street.  The twenty-year old expertly navigated his skateboard around the throngs of people, weaving his way in and out of the bustling midday crowds.

“Or you could just slow down! You’ve got a board, and all I’ve got are my two legs for Pete’s sake!” The blond protested as he rushed to catch-up to his friend.  “‘Hey, Dunn?  Come with me to Finland for my skate demo -- it’ll be fun!’  Fun my ass!” He grumbled as he nearly knocked over a woman whose arms were full of groceries.  “Sorry ma’am,” Ryan apologized sheepishly before continuing to battle his way through the mass of bodies racing around in the frigid Finnish afternoon.  “Damnit Bam, wait up!”

The skater shook his head and ground to a halt, tapping his foot impatiently until Dunn arrived at his side a moment later, gasping for air.  “Listen, we’ve got to be at the airport to head back to the States in an hour or so, and I still haven’t found something to bring back to Ape.  If I show up at home having not gotten her anything on my trip, she’ll never quit bitching about it!”

Bam punctuated his statement with a dramatic eye roll, and Dunn groaned as he spun around quickly, eyeing every storefront for anywhere that might sell something that Bam’s mother would appreciate.  “Hey Bam Bam, look: an antique shop.  I bet we could find some old piece of shit that looks like something that Ape could ‘ooo’ and ‘ah’ about in there,” he said as he grabbed his friends’ arm and dragged him across the street towards the shop in question.

The bell on the door dinged softly as the two American’s entered the antique shop, and Ryan whistled softly.  “Well, I had no idea that you could fit so much old junk into one place!” He declared as he and Bam marveled at the sheer amount of stuff that was littered everywhere in the store, with no seeming rhyme or reason.  Hair combs next to tea sets; an onyx ring mixed in with a bunch of tiny figurines.  They slowly turned around in a circle, heads tilted up towards the highest shelves that held who-knows-what when a voice from behind them broke them from their reverie.

“See anything you like?” Asked the voice, and the boys turned around to find a tiny, elderly woman smiling up at them, her kind, brown eyes twinkling just a bit as she spoke again.  “Was there something you were looking for specifically?”

Bam shifted his weight on his feet before answering the woman’s question.  “Well, I’m from America, and I was hoping to be able to bring something back from Finland for my mother--”

“Ah! What a sweet boy!” The woman exclaimed, cutting Bam off before he had a chance to finish speaking.  She grasped his face between her wrinkled hands and kissed his cheeks, first the right and then the left, as Ryan giggled like a school girl.  Bam rolled his eyes at his friend, and managed to politely wrench himself from the woman’s grasp.           The skater smiled at her as she took his hand and began to show him various bits and baubles around the shop, but it was a tarnished metal object that caught his eye from across the small room.  Feeling strangely drawn to it, Bam slowly walked towards the item, and laughed as he came up close to it.  “Hey Ry; look!” He called out as he examined the piece from its place on the shelf.  “It’s a tea kettle! How perfect is that?!? Ape is all about serving tea and stuff when people come over -- she’ll love it!”

Ryan grinned at his friend and nodded.  “Yeah man, it’s perfect for Ape; it’s functional and an antique! Let’s get it!”

Bam nodded furiously in agreement; however, as he reached out his hand to pick up the selected bauble, the shop woman’s hand reached out and stopped him.  “Oh, my dear boy, that is not a tea kettle,” she began, “and it is not for sale…trust me, you don’t want it…” she finished, her voice trailing off as she stared into Bam’s clear blue eyes.

“Well, if it’s not a tea kettle, then what is it?” He asked, his curiosity having gotten the better of him.

The woman sighed as if a great weight had just descended upon her, and clasped his hand in hers as she spoke.  “It is no tea kettle my child, it is a lamp…and one that can bring either blessings or curses,” she said softly, as if it could hear her words.

“Blessing and curses, huh?” Ryan questioned, his expression clearly saying I don’t believe a word of your voodoo crap lady.

She nodded, and after shooting Dunn the briefest of dirty looks, turned her attention back to Bam.  “They say the lamp was cast out of gold in the fiery pits of Hell Itself, and that a demon of the Lower Realm resides inside of it, determining whether or not it should bring the owner good fortune…or disaster…”

“So you’re saying Santa Claus is a genie in a lamp?” Ryan joked as he giggled, which soon turned into full-blown laughter.  “I’m sorry lady, I really am, but me and my friend here don’t scare too easily…we’ve hit our heads on hard objects waaaaay too many times to be scared of anything other than each other!”

Bam rolled his eyes for the umpteenth time that day, and looked down at the woman.  “I appreciate your concern and the great story, but I really don’t believe in all that doom-and-gloom-spooky-talk.  I’ll be fine -- I promise. Now, how much do you want for it, so my friend and I can be on our way?”

The woman bowed her head and shook it sadly.  “My child, I can see that you are determined to own this item, and that is enough for me to sell it to you…but please be careful with it; its powers are not to be taken lightly-“

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, blah, blah, blah, got it.  Now can you settle up with Bam here so that he and I make our flight?”

The skater smiled apologetically at the kind woman, and paid her the asking price immediately without haggling for it, not because he thought it was worth as much as she asked for it, but more for putting up with Dunn being such a rude asshole.  She placed the antique lamp in a bag for him, and sent them on their way.

As Ryan got to work flagging down a taxi to take them to the airport, Bam reached into the bag and pulled out the lamp to have a closer look at his purchase.  He turned the tarnished item over in his hands, and noticed that once side had what looked like writing on it.  Rubbing his finger across the surface to remove some of the tarnish, he saw clearly an ornate design of what looked like a heart and a triangle superimposed on top of each other, and he furrowed his brow in confusion at the strange symbol.  I’ve never seen anything like that before he thought to himself as he stared at the etched drawing.  Seeing what looked like words buried beneath years of dust and tarnish under the strange symbol, he started to reach out to remove some of the filth and have a better look at it when Ryan grabbed his arm.  “Dude, I got us a taxi,” he explained as he pulled Bam into the cab.  “Airport please,” the blond told the driver as Bam shoved the lamp back into the bag, not really giving it a second thought.  “It’s a rad gift Bam; just make sure you clean it up and wrap it before you give it to her; you know how she can be about that stuff! Ape is gonna love it!” Ryan declared as the cab sped toward the airport, and took them one step close to home.

Exhausted from his trip and the flight, Bam headed straight for his room once he was home from the airport. Collapsing in a heap on his bed, he immediately fell into a deep sleep; he dreamt of stone walls, graveyards, and crashing waves that oddly resembled the sound of someone crying…

***

Not yet adjusted to the time difference, Bam found that he was wide awake in what was, in truth, the middle of the night.  Rolling over, he glanced at the clock: 3 am.  Groaning in frustration, he sat up in bed, marveling at how quiet the house was.  Ape must have sent everyone home thinking that I needed the peace and quiet, and she was right he thought with an appreciative smile as he turned on a light and surveyed the room, his eyes falling on the bag from the antique shop.

Pushing himself up off of the bed, Bam walked over to where the bag was resting, and brought it back over to the bed with him.  He sat down on the edge of the mattress, and took the lamp out of the bag, fascinated by the weathered look of the gold antique.  Remembering the inscription that he saw on the side while in Finland, Bam turned it over in his hands so that he was looking at the strange, heart-triangle symbol again.  It seemed to mesmerize his thoughts, and the skater narrowed his eyes in an attempt to try to make out the lettering below it.  Grabbing a random towel that had surely been lying around his room since before he had left for Finland, Bam carefully rubbed the surface of the lamp, and found that the filth that covered it came off much easier than he thought it would.              Minutes later, the lamp was devoid of all tarnish and caked-on dust, and he could see that there was, in fact, lettering below the foreign, ornate design.  Finding it difficult to make out a few of the letters, Bam carefully ran his finger over the engraving, tracing their outline as he sounded out the two words as they were most certainly not in English.

“Sig-ill-um Di-a-bo-li,” he said slowly as he ran a finger over the letters, puzzled by their meaning.

“Sig-illum Dia-boli.”  Bam repeated the words for the second time, still clueless as to what they meant, or even what language it was as his fingers again traced the letters.

Sigillum Diaboli,” the skater repeated for the third time, saying the words a bit louder.  As the last syllable passed his lips, he suddenly felt extraordinarily light-headed, and he looked down at the lamp in his hands, as it seemed to have started glowing a bit.  Lamps don’t glow…I must be getting sick…that’s why I’m dizzy and seeing things he thought as the world seemed to spin around him.

A sudden burning sensation coursed through his fingertips, and Bam looked down to see the lamp radiating as if it were on fire.  He let out a tiny yelp, and jumped back away from the lamp, letting it clamor to the floor in the process.  Oh man, I must be really sick he mumbled as he staggered off of his bed and towards the door with the intention of going to the bathroom.  All at once, the earth seemed to pitch violently beneath his feet, and he stumbled, only to feel himself being caught by two thin, yet surprisingly strong arms.

The world seemed to stop spinning as suddenly as it had begun, and Bam could once again feel the ground under his feet.

“Master, are you alright? Are you ill? Do you need medical attention?” A soothing baritone asked, slightly raspy as if from lack of use.

Bam lifted his head in fear towards the source of the voice, and the last thing he saw before he passed out was two perfect, jade orbs staring with concern into his own brilliant cerulean eyes.

“Master?”
