Summary:  Why could the wind not carry peace to them as it had carried away the smoke?

Notes:  (484 words).  Pure fluff born of too much “Cyanide Sun,” or the music behind it (I know you’ve noticed how calming it is).  I owed you Vam, Nic and, damn it, you got your Vam.

Cool, crisp night under brightly shining stars.  The gentle breeze brought with it a wave of calm.  It was unfortunate that it did not bring sleep with it.

A call, soft and short; smoke carried away by the cool fingers of the wind.  It had been some time since either of them had slept peacefully.  Why could the wind not carry peace to them as it had carried away the smoke?  As it carried away the first few leaves of oncoming autumn?  Why could it not return them to one another’s arms?

Soft sighs.  Green eyes scanning the heavens; blue eyes scanning the roads.  Perhaps the wind would carry peace back to them.

Soft voices, insisting that he come inside.  It was growing cold, they said.  Night was growing old, they said.  He would join them soon enough, he said as he cast away the remains of a third cigarette.  Little did he know that his lover had done the same, left a smoldering bit of debris on the road to be crushed beneath so many tires.

The bus door closed behind him.  They would open it again if he knocked, he knew.  It was just to keep the heat in.  They would never cast him out.

Green eyes fell to the ground, cast into shadow.  Blue eyes grew bright.  While soft, slender fingers idly twirled an unlit cigarette, calloused fingers tightened on the wheel.  He was almost there.  No one knew but him.

Fingers lifted a cigarette to soft, pink lips.  A flame and the tip began to glow.  A hunched body straightened.  The wind had been replaced by a dull roar.  Shadows were replaced by bright lights.  The roar grew louder.  He looked up, blinded.  He shielded his eyes and squinted until they vanished along with the roar.

The roar died away.  A door opened; someone leapt from the vehicle before him; the door slammed shut.  The vehicle was a Hummer.  The lights inside revealed it to be a familiar shade of blue.

Green eyes widened; blue eyes smiled.  The cigarette was forgotten.  The two shared a tight embrace; a reunion at a highway rest stop.

Soft lips met in the softest kiss; nevermind the smoke.  The kiss was broken; green eyes met blue.  Both were smiling.  It had been far too long.

The wind blew again.  They sighed together.  They finally felt at peace, standing under an early autumn sky, wrapped in one another’s arms.

The bus door opened.  One of the others was about to speak.  The words caught in his throat and instead a smile spread across his face.  He shook his head, thick cables of golden hair swaying gently, and returned to the bus.

The others peered out at the lovers.  They breathed a collective sigh of relief.  The sound was lost beneath the wind.  The reunion outside meant peace for them all, for the moment at least.
