Jyrki’s jaw dropped and Dani’s heart beat wildly in his chest, he couldn’t have got it wrong. He’d worked out all the dates; he even looked like Jyrki-kinda.

“Exactly what has Ville told you?”

Dani ran his hand through his wavy dark brown hair, exasperated. “Nothing! He’s told me nothing! You tell me, or I’ll go insane.”

“It’s not really my place…”

“If you don’t tell me I’m gonna go on thinking that you are my dad, and that you didn’t want me, that you still don’t, and that will make you as bad as him. Worse even, cos at least he didn’t abandon me.” It never occurred to him that Jyrki may not have wanted kids, that he had left because Ville had wanted to keep him and he hadn’t.

He’d just presumed it was his dad’s fault, that his dad had stopped any contact between them. Why other reason wouldn’t he say anything about it?

Jyrki sighed and sat at one of the pews, Dani sat in the pew in front of him, kneeling on the cold bench, hands clutching the back tightly.

“I’m not your father, Dani.” He said it slowly, painfully, as if the knowledge hurt.

“You’re lying. Give me some kind of evidence.” He had to be lying. He just didn’t want to be a father, didn’t want him.

“We were both on tour when you were conceived.” He paused. “Separate tours.” Jyrki was mad; mad at Ville for betraying him all those years ago, and for leaving it to him to explain it all to a kid that wasn’t even his. It wasn’t his place; he shouldn’t have to be doing this.

Didn’t Ville understand how hard it was for him? Being on tour with HIM, seeing the singer’s son, a son, that could have been his under other circumstances? He’d tried to be calm, to act like it didn’t still hurt, that he didn’t still think about it.

But it was difficult, would have been difficult if Dani hadn’t been there, but was even more so with him. He was a good kid, and Ville had done a good job with him, he hadn’t realised that Dani was under some kind of illusion that he was his father.

Maybe he should have guessed, from the way Dani had been hanging around, wanting to spend time with him, he just didn’t think that Ville wouldn’t have told his own son who his other father was.

“Then who the fuck is my other dad?”

Of course he was going to ask, and Jyrki felt the old bitterness rise in his throat like bile. “An American piece of shit,” the words slipped out, and he had to remind himself that he was talking to a child. “Pro-skater, star of a dumb TV show called Jackass.”

Dani frowned, as if searching his memory. “Hey! That guy who directed a few of dad’s early videos?”

Jyrki nodded, staring into eyes that were uncannily like his own. In another world they could have been father and son, in another time he and Ville may have worked out.

Dani leaned his chin on the back of the pew, the energy leaving him. “Wow. I really thought that you-” he shook his head. “Never mind. I kind of wish it was you though.”

The singer smiled wistfully and ruffled the boy’s hair. “Ditto.”

“Can you not tell dad about this conversation? I want him to tell me himself, promise?”
