Cards are a simple, beautiful thing. They sometimes can convey our innermost thoughts, without us actually being there and saying the words.

A card can bring a light of joy to someone, even if it only says ‘Thinking of You.’

There are cards for every occasion, you’ll never run out, but why am I rambling about cards? Let me tell you a story, a story of how one simple card reassured and strengthened the love of a lifetime.

It was a cold and rainy day, a sucky day for a birthday really. He sighed as he jobbed out to the mailbox. Opening the thing he found a stack of envelopes. Grabbing them, he ran back inside his castle, thumbing quickly through the stack.

“Bill, bill, business, check, check, bill, bill, township complaint, PHIL!” He yelled and a ‘huh?’ came from the office upstairs.

“I got some mail for ya.” Bam replied, taking the steps two at a time.

“Are they all bills?” Phil asked, receiving the stack.

“Nah, there are some checks too.” Bam leaned against the door and watched as his father looked through the stack.

“Another township complaint and...this one’s yours.” Phil handed him a priority, first class, international, piece of mail. “It’s from Finland.” Phil commented and chuckled softly as Bam quickly retreated from the office. Blunt fingernails ripped at brown paper as he walked into his room. Finally it was open. Taking a deep breath, Bam pulled out the paper inside.

It was a thick piece of paper, fashioned into a card. A hand drawn heartagram adorned the front. Emerald green vines twisted around the thick crimson lines of the symbol he loved so deeply. His own named graced the front as well, twisting down from the vines below the heartagram.

Bam felt his lips curl into a smile. He remembered. They’d been friends for years, he and Ville, but he never seemed to remember his birthday.

“Things are different now.” He whispered, reminding himself that they were more than just friends now. Chuckling softly, Bam opened the homemade card.

Bam,

Happiest wishes on your birthday!

I wish I could be with you on that day.

Thinking of you always,

All My Love,

Ville.

Tears stung his eyes. He felt like a girl, but it was the sweetest thing anyone had ever done for him. He clutched the card to his chest and flopped back on his bed.

“I wish you could be here too.” He whispered and closed his eyes.

“Bam?” Ape’s voice came from the door.

“Yeah Ape?” He sat up, she was standing in the doorway, her hands on her hips.

“What are you doing?” She asked.

“Just reading a card I got.” He held it out to her and she stepped into the room, walking forward to take it.

“It’s beautiful.” She said, then opened it to read the message. “It’s more than beautiful.” Bam smiled at her. It was a sad smile.

“He’s a beautiful guy.”

“Cheer up, Bam. You’ll see him soon.” Ape stood the card on his bedside table and grabbed his hand. “C’mon. We’ll have a drink together.”

“Sounds Rad.”

So what did you think? I like that part. Which is odd for me!
