Chapter 24

It was finally the day of the competition and Bam’s nerves just decided to start up on him at the last minute. A couple hours still sat between now and the competition, but he’s have to leave soon to get some practice in before it started. Sighing at his nervousness, he reached over and grabbed his cellphone. Without looking at the mobile device, he dialed up a number that he knew by heart. As he listened to it ring, he began to tap his fingers on his knee as he became impatient.

Finally it stopped. “Hello.” a distracted voice spoke into the phone.

He couldn’t stop the smile that played on his lips. “Hey Ville, it’s me.” he spoke softly.

If he wasn’t mistaken, he was able to hear a soft chuckle on the other end of the line. “Let me guess, you’re calling me because you just now became nervous?” Ville questioned, pinpointing the whole situation.

Bam shook his head at Ville’s words. “How do you know me that well?” he asked with a laugh.

“I have E.S.P.” Ville joked, causing the both of them to laugh at it. “Besides the fact that today happens to be the competition, I would never know.” he added sarcastically.

He knew Ville was being a smartass only to help him forget about his nerves, and he really appreciated it. “So what are you doing right now?” Bam questioned, trying to change the subject.

“Mige gave me permission to work on one of our new songs, so I’m adjusting some of the lyrics.” Ville answered after a few seconds of silence.

Bam could help but laugh slightly. “I thought you were the singer, meaning you’re in charge. So since when do you need permission to work on some songs?” he asked as slowly climbed to his feet.

He was able to hear Ville laugh at his question. “Because they know I’d change all the songs, and they want to be a part of it all too.” Ville had explained, hoping Bam understood. Silence fell among them as Bam began a search for something to wear, and Ville continued with his music. “Shouldn’t you be heading down there soon?” Ville’s voice broke the silence over both lines.

At the question, Bam moved his watch covered wrist in front of him to read the time. “Yeah. I have to leave in a couple of minutes if I want to get some practice in.” he answered softly. “When will you be there?”

Ville became silence as he thought about it. “It’s in what, 3 hours? I’ll be there in 2. How’s that?” Ville answered Bam’s question with one of his own.

“Alright. I’ll see you there.” Bam replied, smile still on his face. The two then said their goodbyes before hanging up.

Ville shook his head as he hung up his phone. Somehow he knew that that call was going to happen. Even though Bam was completely ready for this, it was more of a mind over matter thing. If he didn’t think about it so much, he’s have nothing to worry about. Placing his notebook on the coffee table, along with his phone, he began to climb to his feet. He knew that he should start getting ready now if he wanted to make it in time. Stepping around the couch he started in the direction of the bathroom. Halfway there and the sound of his phone ringing stopped him. Glancing over his shoulder, he debated on answering it or not. With a quickly sigh, he turned around and headed back to the couch. In the back of his mind he had a feeling that it was Bam again. Finally reaching it, he turned it on. “Yes?”

“Is this Ville Valo?” a different voice asked into the receiver.

Pulling the phone away from his ear, he quickly looked at the caller id to see that it was an unknown number. “Yes, this is he. May I ask who’s calling?” he questioned carefully.

“Oh yes. This is Seppo, the manager that you spoke to the other night at your show.” he explained quickly and Ville instantly remember who he was now talking too.

“Oh, I remember now. So what can I do for you?” Ville asked as he took a seat back on the couch.

“Well I talked with some other employers of mine and if you’re still interested…”

Noises of all sorts filled his ears as he pushed his way through the crowds. The building that the competition was held in was pretty packed since the contest was to start in about 30 minutes. As he pushed his way through the crowd, he finally reached the area he was looking for.

“There he is!” he heard Dunn’s familiar voice.

“Hey guys.” he said with a smile as he approached everyone that had come to watch and support him. His eyes quickly scanned over everyone that showed up. Dunn, Dico, Raab, Yohn, Ape, Phil, Jess and Deron. A frown quickly found his lips, but he had turned his head some no one could see it. There was only one person he really wanted to be there and he was nowhere to be found.

Deciding to shake it off, he could just be running late. He had to tendency to do that. Turning his attention to those that where there, he started up a conversation until it was his turn.

~*~

He was seated in the back seat of the car with his bag sitting on the floor next to his feet. He had his head leaning against the window as he mentally cursed himself many of times. Why was he doing this? Why was he leaving everything behind again? He then began to think back to his conversation with Seppo. He had told him that if they wanted to get a label, they were to up and leave everything that night. He knew that as soon as he called the guys and told them everything that was happening, that this was what they wanted. He didn’t want too really leave everything he had worked so hard for, but chances like this were very slim.

As he got lost in his thoughts he noticed Mige was pulling into a parking lot that was completely packed. Pulling his head off of the window, he looked around. “What are we doing here?” he questioned softly as he tried to figure out where they were.

Mige stopped the car and put it in park before turning in his seat to look back at him. “He really wanted you to be here. It was on the way and we have a few minutes to spare. You will see him do something that he loves to do before we leave.” Mige answered while at the same time pulling his keys out of the ignition. Not really feeling up to arguing with Mige, Ville just nodded his head before climbing out of the car. Following Mige into the building, they began to make their way through the crowd. The area where everyone got to watch from was completely packed, so they got stuck in the middle of it all.

“Where is he?” Ville asked as he scanned the floor for the brunette.

“And up next. Bam Margera.” They heard being called over the speakers.

“Up there.” Mige finally answered as he pointed in the direction that he had found him.

Ville brought his eyes in the direction that Mige was pointing out and sure enough he found Bam standing at the top of a roll-in. As the skater before Bam finished his line, the crowd cheered for him. Ville saw someone talking to Bam, who just kept nodding his head in reply. He then noticed that Bam had look depressed, if not disappointed, and he knew it was because of himself. Sure he was here, but Bam didn’t know that. Just like Bam didn’t know he was leaving to go back to Finland for a record deal this very night. He watched as Bam was given the signal to begin his run. As he watched him do his line, he tried to remember everything about this man. They both knew that they loved one another but they never labeled what they had. It was to early to label it. Finally Bam’s run was over and the crowd went wild. Ville knew then that Bam would be except as a finalist. They both were going to get what they wanted in life, but in order to get it they couldn’t be together. He frowned at the thought as he felt Mige pull on his sleeve.

“It’s time to go.” he spoke gently but loud enough for Ville to hear over the crowd. Ville nodded his head as he followed Mige back through the crowd. Stopping at the exit, he looked over his shoulder at Bam one last time, who was getting congratulated on his run. A sigh escaped his lips as he hung his head and exited the building. This was the last time he would see him, and he had no clue when the next time would be.

The competition was over and the only people that were really left was the finalists, their supporters, and a couple other people that had lingered around after the contest. Bam could never been happier, he was one of the finalist. Next competition was in a few weeks and if he won that one, he’d be sponsored. Even though he was excited for making it as one, he was still disappointed that Ville wasn’t there for it. He needed to get out of there and find out what had happened. Spotting Jess on the other side of the building, he took off running towards him. “Jess! Jess!” he shouted as he got closer to his brother.

“What!?” he questioned back at his watched his brother come to a halt in front of him.

Once at a stop, he took a deep breath. “I need you’re car.”

“No.” Jess answered as he watched his brother’s face fall. “Remember last time you took it?”

“Come on. Ville never showed up and I need to go to his apartment.” Bam explained as he calmed his breath to an even, steady rhythm.

“How about I drive you there.” Jess suggested as his brother almost jumped on him. Taking that as a yes, they found everyone that had come out to see Bam and said their goodbyes. Then he, Bam, and Deron headed outside and made their way over to the car. “So are you sure he was coming?” Jess asked as he unlocked the doors.

“Yeah. I talked to him right before I left to come here.” Bam answered as he nodded his head at the same time. Then hearing his door unlock, he quickly climbed into the front passenger seat. Once all three of them were in the car, Jess headed back into town and towards Ville’s apartment. The three of them remained quiet, none of them knowing what to say. Minutes passed before Jess pulled up to the building that Ville lived in. The car didn’t even come to a complete stop before Bam had jumped out of it. Running into the front doors, he raced his way up the stairs until he was on the third floor.

Coming to a stop at Ville’s door, he quickly brought his hand up and started to knock on the door. He received no answer and knocked again. After receiving no answer again, he quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out the spare key Ville had given him the night Ville brought him to his apartment. Unlocking the door as fast as he could, he threw open the door and stepped inside. The whole apartment was covered in darkness. After a second or two, he began to search the place for any sign to where Ville could be. He found nothing, until he came to his bedroom. A few drawers to his dresser where open and empty. His closet door was left open and all his clothes were gone. The only thing within the room that wasn’t touched was the bed. It was neatly made. “He’s gone?” Bam whispered aloud as he tried to figure out what happened.

Jess and Deron had waited a little bit before following in after Bam. Since Jess had been here once, he knew which apartment was Ville’s. However, as they came close to the top steps of the third floor, they saw bam sitting on the top step. He had his hands linked together and was holding them out in front of himself, jut staring down at them. “What’s wrong?” Jess finally found himself asking.

Bam slowly brought his head up and he heard his brother’s question. “He’s gone.” he whispered as he pulled apart his hands and a piece of crumpled up paper fell to the stairs.

Jess reached forward and picked up the piece of paper. Carefully he opened it.

Bam,

If you are reading this then I’m gone. Please believe me when I say this, but I had to go back to Finland. I received an unexpected phone call and I had to up and leave. If us being together was fate then don’t search for me. Let time bring us back together.

Ville
