Summary: Some explainations.
Ville went downstairs to the kitchen, pretending that nothing had happened, but he carefully avoided Bam all day and made arrangements to sleep on a couch that evening.
Ville’s tactics didn’t go unnoticed by Bam and even though he was sore and doped up on painkillers he could still make plans. Plans that didn’t even have to involve a prank.
The next morning when Ville woke up he found Bam sitting on a chair across the room. Ville groaned silently and closed hs eyes again but it was too late, Bam had already seen that he was awake.
“Cheer up, faker.” Bam said, “You should know by now that I almost always get my way. So, we can do this one of two ways, with you willingly listening and talking or I’ll keep sneaking up on you.”
Ville cursed audibly but Bam only laughed at him. “Not right now, alright, let me get breakfast and wake up?” Ville requested.
Bam shook his head. “By the time you do all that everyone will be awake. Now, or this evening, but you have to promise to quit trying to avoid me.”
Ville groaned again, aloud this time, and said that he would talk that evening. Bam grinned and turned on the TV, letting Ville go away and wake up, defeated before breakfast.
The day turned out to be long and exhausting, though, and by that evening both Bam and Ville were too worn out to do anything but eat dinner and go to bed.
During breakfast, kindly provided by Ape, the police department called, saying that they wanted to question Bam some more. Bam didn’t want to go but he did, unable to come up with a good excuse to get out of it. Ville went also, at the detective’s request, to maybe think up more helpful thoughts and make sure that between them, he and Bam had everything straight.
Ryan dropped them off before lunchtime and they gave statements, were questioned, and generally went through the whole thing again. Then the officer said that they wanted to show Bam the tape of Carthy’s interview, since Bam refused to even go in the same room as her.
Bam was hesitant but both he and Ville wanted to see what she had to say so they watched.
Ville had barely seen her the day of the attack, he had been too preoccupied tackling her, then helping Bam, then bleeding all over the place and throwing up. He hadn’t really taken much notice of her appearance, he hadn’t even registered that she was female until Dani had said something about her being a bitch. She was about as average as one could get, not tall, not short, not skinny but not overweight, mouse brown hair, hazel eyes. Just any one of hundreds of girls he had seen at concerts, on the street and back in high school. She spoke calmly and evenly, showing no sign of insanity as she described her activities before the day of the attack, how she had followed Bam around, sent him notes, begged him to meet with her. To marry her. The first hint that something was wrong with her was when she was asked why she had attacked Bam.
“He was sleeping around on me. First Jenn, then his new boytoy; Ville. I decided that Bam needed to know that sleeping around is a sin.”
Her irrationality was blatant and Ville could feel Bam shiver beside him. They thought that was all but the officer questioning her asked what gave her that impression.
“I saw them myself. The night of Bam’s birthday.”
Ville looked down at his forearm, Bam was holding onto him tightly, the knuckles of his hand going white.
They finished the tape, then the detective talked to them. “The doctors say we’ve got a textbook case of schizophrenia.” He informed the. “She’s going to be prosecuted but probably sent to a hospital, rather than jail.”
Bam nodded, pale and sick. Ville didn’t feel much better. “Do you need anything else?” Ville asked.
“No, that’s it. You’ll be notified as to when the trial is and other things but for the time being you should be resting at home and don’t worry any more about her. She’s going to stay locked up.”
Ville nodded and stood, pulling Bam up. “I think it’s time for us to go home.”
Bam looked over, exhausted and suddenly alarmed.
“Your home.” Ville clarified.
Bam nodded and went outside, standing on the sidewalk while Ville called Ryan.
They watched the sunset until Ryan got there. The ride home was quiet and Ryan didn’t ask what had happened though he kept casting worried glances over his shoulder to the backseat where Ville and Bam were sitting, both emotionally wrung out.
Dinner was also quiet, everyone picking up on how tired the pair were, and Ville didn’t eat much before going up to find a bed, not Bam’s, where he could crash.
