Couldn't sleep so I figured I'd watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for the first time. Probably one of the better decisions I've made in awhile. It's not a movie, its more like an aid of realization of what a relationship truly is.
I hate spoilers with a passion, so if you're anything like me, it is probably a better choice to quit reading now. Watch the movie and then come and read it, or just watch the movie. Watch it.
Clementine: Joel, I'm not a concept. Too many guys think I'm a concept or I complete them or I'm going to make them alive, but I'm just a fucked up girl who is looking for my own peace of mind. Don't assign me yours.
Joel: I remember that speech really well.
Clementine: I had you pegged, didn't I?
Joel: You had the whole human race pegged.
Clementine: Probably.
Joel: I still thought you were going to save me. Even after that.
Beautiful. Brilliantly commonsensical. I can't even come to close to suggesting with words the slightest fucking notion of what those lines mean to me.
Anyway it's about a relationship that comes and goes like any other but both parties decide to erase the memory of the relationship (and person) for their own independant reasons.
The whole movie basically revolves around each memory and it's removal, but towards the end the realization, the whole damn point to the movie, suddenly SMACKS you in the face.
(After they meet again after being erased from each other's memory, they hear tapes where they talk shit about each other and why they want that person taken out of their memory)
Joel: I don't see anything I don't like about you. Right now I don't see it. ( I want to be with you)
Clementine: But you will! But you will, and I'll get bored with you and feel trapped, because that's what happens with me!
Joel: Okay. (shrugs shoulders showing indifference)
[last lines]
Clementine: Okay.... Okay! (smiles)
Joel: Okay! (smiles)
Not only did they both know they were going to hate each other in the future, but Joel knew beforehand the heartbreak that was coming and the lies and the deciet. So ironic.
Reread the topic. I'll leave it at that. Bedtime =)
