Some days you just can’t win. This morning my cat dragged a baby Robin into the shop. I was doing the dishes when I heard its cry for help. Went in the shop, found him and the cat took him away from the cat, I gave Kitty hand full of treat as a trade, he seemed satisfied with the transaction. I grabbed a cardboard box and some old newspapers tore them in strips making a liner. Ripped of some branches and stuck them in there. Giving the bird two 2oz cups consisting of water and the other “bird bread pudding”. Lacking anything else to call the substance consisting of bread, water, and sugar, the ancient recipe of wild baby bird food that is instinctively passed down from generation to generation. I took the box down stairs, were it is cooler and put a towel over the top so it would be pitch black. Naturally the bird passed right out, I let him sleep for a good 5 hours. After that I gave him some water and took him out side. He looked old enough to fly so I wanted to test this. This was my folly I think. I’m not sure if his heart was strong enough. We went out to the grass he was on my finger I gently shook him off and he flutter to the ground. He preformed what the helicopter and other pilots a “soft” crash landing. So well perhaps he needs a little hang time. So I picked him up and tossed into the air. It wasn’t hard toss and I caught him we did this abut ten times. I should have known that he couldn’t fly after the first toss and stopped. It was cool to watch him though. He didn’t seem to mind, and he was a fast learner. It got to the point were he hover long enough to turn around to find me then aim for my hands. I was really impressed. I brought him back in put him in his box. Looked like he wanted to sleep so I pulled the towel over the top. About an hour or so later, I hear him flapping around so I looked in the box and he was up side down, picked him up placed him the right way up. Not thinking about really. Closed box and a few second latter I hear the flapping again. He’s not up side down this time just all sprawled out. I knew something wrong then few seconds later he spasm again, chirped 3 times faintly and died. Poor guy.
