10 words- a poetry challange

Feb 01, 2007 23:19

because i need one, and maybe you do too... this is kinda rough but I did it in 45 minutes, long for some, not nearly enough for me.

So, if you want to play, take these 10 words (or some variasion of) and use them in a poem.  This was always one of my favorite literary games.

The Words

Dilate
Advice
Foible
Sanctum
Wield
Arrest
Puckish
Keen
Truant
Dichotomy

My Poem

I wrote this while listening to Cocteau Twins' "Dear Heart" over and over, and so it is named...

In an aftermath of January, this day
settles like new snow in the foot prints
outside my window; fresh and new but covering an impression
left before her truancy from my neighborhood. She left
before I had barely said hello tonight, she even left her car
running against the advice of her dear heart.
Dear Heart, keep me real but don’t let me reveal you too soon;
a foible, once admired, now arrested.

In an aftermath of January, this new us
settles like whispers on pillows
that lie on my bed, fresh and new and unimpressed
since she left; holds now only the keening of my heart.
I dilate a little each minute she gives me
her smile, that which she knows does me in,
as she sits in the corner with apuckish grin, wielding my dear heart.
keep me real but don’t let me reveal you too soon, Dear Heart,
a sanctum, once admired, now dichotomized.
