I've been following guster for 8 years. Yes, 8, back when they were doing the club scene throughout the mid-atlantic state (shameless JSA reference), so ummm I win? No, no, I definitely win. Change the "I win?" to "I win!".
But do you have a copy of "Parachute"? The band's independant recording from Tuft's when they were still named "Gus"?
Didn't think so.
I have it on a booklegged cassette somewhere... my cousin (all grown up) was all into them and gave it to me when i was like 7. Good stuff.
You get points for following a great band - but lose some for trying to out-indie me. I'm pretty sure that only Kelly Siss, Ben Sugarman, and Phil Drummond can beat me in early 90's alternative love.
You lose mega points for claiming that I want to out-indie you. I hate indie music, its 99% trash. The term "indie" should not be a genre, it should be an adjective. At one point slipknot was indie, as was jessica simpson. I don't care enough about who knows more about obscure bands.
Garsizzle- Additionally. You did want to out-indie me. And yes, that is using "indie" in its adjective form. By claiming to have known a band since before they became big... you are attempting to gain "indie cred". It is what it is.
It is YOU who is indeed claiming indie to be a genre. you are correct. Every band is indie before they become big. Therefore, your comment of "blah blah blah obscure bands" is contradicting your previous statement.
I'll make this abundantly clear: INDIE IS NOT A GENRE, IT IS AN ADJECTIVE. In the game of who knows Guster first, I want to win because Guster is a band that got popular after they put out their best music. Therefore, I want to associate myself with the early Guster people, not the late Guster people. While everyone has a right to listen to whatever music they want, they also have a right to be wrong. I dont care about "indie cred". Honestly. I could not give less of a shit. Well I could less of a shit, but it would be one of those pebbles that come out when you are quasi-constipated, but not really.
Indie is "indie" for a reason... no record label wants them!!! They appeal to, almost by very definition, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE. You may call my music taste bad, but there are millions that agree with me. Bytheby, those artists are on the same ipod as the beatles, stones, coldplay, rhcp, and other "legit' musicians.
Tell "no label wants them" to once indepedantly recorded (thus indie) bands like The Postal Service, Death Cab For Cutie and Decembrists - all of whom will likely make more money that any of us will ever see ever.
While indie, accurately used, is an adjective... you can't argue with pop culture when it comes to genre defining. If VH1 or MTV or any mainstream radio station decided to make "Pirate Hooker Hip Pop Acid Jazz" a genre - they can and will.
"Rock and Roll" was once an adjective. It is now a genre.
I expect your thanks to be delivered in cash by tomorrow morning.

Thus, I win.
You lose, if only because of the Jonas Brothers.
