Why is it that everywhere I turn, people confuse gender with sexual orientation? And I'm not talking about the snaggle-toothed, rednecks whose only exposure to transpeople are on Jerry Springer. I'm talking about this:
Taken from a community called glbt:
"We are open to everyone but are primarily focused on the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and transvestite comminuties. Straight people are welcome, but be respectful, or be banished."
I am trans. I'm a guy, and I'm only attracted to women. Hence, straight. So, why is this making being trans and being straight a mutually exclusive thing? Does everyone that is trans have to identify as "queer" in order to be part of this little group? Or is this a subconscious way of saying that someone like me could never REALLY be a straight man? Because well, straight men are just too macho, and misogynistic, and mmwwwwaaaahh, and no trans guy would ever be so insensitive (since we were women at one time and all).
People think I'm stealth because of safety. They think I'm stealth because of people who are ignorant of trans issues. They think I'm hiding from the "straight" world. No, actually, I'm stealth because I don't want anyone, ANYONE to assume I'm any different, any better or worse, than every other man. And any attempt to set me apart is an insult to me, and, despite whatever proud label of "ally" you've tacked on your shirt, you are just as much the fucking enemy as anyone else.
