Brian Fagab, The Little Ice Age: Couldn't finish it. I'm not sure if the Spanish translation was too bad, if it was just badly written, or if the book was contextually better when it came out, but by now the climate-history relationship is a common enough locus that writing quality matters.

Thank you for reminding me why I love Emily Dickinson. God, that poem about pain. I've never read a better description.

I adore Emily Dickinson.

Success is counted sweetest
By those who ne'er succeed.
To comprehend a nectar
Requires sorest need.

Not one of all the purple host
Who took the flag to-day
Can tell the definition,
So clear, of victory!

As he, defeated, dying,
On whose forbidden ear
The distant strains of triumph
Burst agonized and clear!

Name that quote: "Any Emily Dickinson poem can be sung to the tune of 'The Yellow Rose of Texas.'"

Also, to the tune of "Amazing Grace."

Also, may I recommend to you Louise Gluck? Particularly Vita Nova? Some of her stuff is very much in the vein of the Emily Dickinson poems you've posted here.
