"Under the law, the provisions of the Road Safety Act, 1986, relating to drink driving refer to the drivers or riders of motor vehicles.

A bicycle in its true sense does not fall into the category of a motor vehicle."

No idea what act its related to, but I've known people to be fined for bike-riding while drunk... I dare say its a much more minor and non-prosecutorial offense.

That said, the likelyhood of being done for drunk riding is incredibly rare.

They must have been basically falling off their bikes for the police to notice something was up.

There is no law that states that you can't ride your bike drunk, but they are aloud to give you a fine if they assume your intoxicated, which then doesn't make any sense of there being no law.

So you'd either have to be riding all over the rode for them to notice you or have been holding a beer or something whilst riding the bike.

Oh absolutely - you gotta be doing something pretty damn stupid for cops to pull over a pushbike!

That said I've heard horror stories of people scraping cars and not being able to ride even slightly straight when drunk...

Well I know a lot of people who can't walk in a straight line but decided it's ok to ride home and not wear a helmet.

Dumb fuckers!

It's a shame it's not against the law to be a moron!

But short answer to Gerry: It's not against the law but you can get a fine for it! o_O
