Eric had been sent back to the lab to process the evidence he collected and the evidence from the day before. As he looked through the inventory, he noticed that there was a piece of evidence missing. But, he checked inventory last night, before he went home, and his name was last on the check out sheet.
Crap, Eric thought, as he put the inventory list down, and put the boxes away. This doesn't look good for me.
He opened the door, and he spotted Speed and Horatio in the trace lab. He did know that Speed was the Trace expert around here; it had come up in the conversation they had walking to Speed's bike last night. He went to open the door, but paused as he saw how physically close Speed and Horatio were.
Horatio was just pointing to the computer screen and nodding as Speed was only talking about the trace that was found. But they were mere inches away from each other. He got a sinking feeling at the bottom of his stomach and he subconsciously clenched his hands.
Then, he frowned and unclenched his hands; he wasn't jealous, was he? Eric wasn't entirely sure.
"What're you doing?" Calleigh asked.
Eric spun around and responded guiltily, "Uhh, nothing."
"What're you standing there for, then?" Calleigh asked, smirking and opening the door for Eric to enter. She followed closely behind him.
"What's up, Eric?" Horatio asked, turning to face the duo.
Eric looked from Speed, to Calleigh, to Horatio, and then cleared his throat. "It looks like there's some missing evidence."
Horatio frowned. "What's missing, Eric?"
Eric opened his mouth to respond, but Calleigh interupted him. "The knife?" Eric only nodded.
Horatio raised an eyebrow. "Calleigh?" he inquired.
Calleigh held out an evidence bag that held the knife they collected at today's scene. "I took this to Valera to get it processed, and she said there were two DNA samples; Sheryl's and Molly's.
"And, I think if you take a trace sample, you'd probably find fingerprint powder. I printed the weapon yesterday, but I don't think Eric did yet."
Eric, who was staring incredulously at the knife, shook his head. "No, I figured I could after DNA was processed."
There was a pause as what Calleigh said sunk in. "Eric," Horatio said, "when you processed the knife yesterday, did you find the killer's DNA on it?"
Eric just shrugged. "Most of the blood on the knife was the victim's, except for one small drop on the handle. It came up as unknown in the database. but it was male."
Horatio nodded once slowly. "So the killer cleaned off his blood but not Molly's, and then goes to kill Sheryl.
"So what else do we know so far? Speed?"
Speed turned to face the rest of the group. "At Molly's crime scene, there were traces of cleaning solution, that the killer used to wipe any prints that were left. Same thing at Sheryl's. But, there is no evidence that he tried to clean up the blood, just the prints."
"Okay, so this guy doesn't care about DNA, only prints. Which means we probably have a match for him, and he cleaned up in order not to get caught. But, we obviously don't have his DNA on record.
"Any theories of interest you have?"
No one spoke, and the silence was killing him. So, Eric spoke. "I think this guy's related to the department, somehow." Speed raised an eyebrow, and Horatio looked down at his feet. "I mean, how else could he get past reception and into temporary storage?"
Horatio looked up and nodded. "You're right Eric. We might be looking for a lawyer or a dirty cop. Keep your eyes open.
"Calleigh. It looks like this guy has killed before. Can you look through the records for any cases like this, nationwide?"
Calleigh nodded and shoved the evidence bag in Speed's hands. "That is your problem now." Her smile never wavered and she left the room looking just as cheery as when she left. Eric was astounded; he had never seen anyone take such news so happily.
"Speed, you're on the knife?"
Speed nodded and made eye contact with Eric. He smiled briefly and turned back to the computer.
Horatio turned to Eric. "Eric, can you get back to the evidence we found today?"
Eric nodded, but paused. "H, why don't we look through unsolved cases with the names of employees of the judicial system?"
Horatio smiled sadly. "Because this department does not hire suspects, even if the case has been cold, so our suspect probably changed his name."
Eric had returned to temporary storage, to work on new evidence when a man that Eric had never met before stormed in looking very mad at him. Speed was running in behind him, also looking angry.
"Stetler, you're crazy," Speed was saying, "Delko's only been here for a couple of days!"
The new guy, Stetler, grabbed the box out of Eric's hand and turned to face Speed. "That is exactly why I suspect him, Tim." The sneer he had on his face was arrogant, and Eric wanted to hit it off his face.
"What do you think I did?" Eric asked looking first at Speed, and then at Stetler. "Who're you?"
"He's IAB, Eric," Horatio said, from the doorway.
"Yes, IAB," Stetler said, now looking at Horatio with that sneer. Then, he looked at Eric. "And you are not working on this evidence anymore."
"He couldn't have killed them," Calleigh said, magically showing up beside Horatio. She smiled at Stetler, but it was nothing Eric would call nice. "Time of death for Molly and Sheryl was morning, when Eric was on his way here. Plus, his DNA was filed when he got the job."
"And so was everyone else's DNA," Stetler pointed out. "But I'm not accusing him of killing them, I'm accusing him of stealing evidence."
Horatio smiled and shook his head. "Rick, the killer took the evidence, cleaned his blood off it, and then killed Sheryl Coolidge. Why would anyone else have motive?"
"I don't care about motive, Horatio. Evidence shows that Delko here was the last one to sign into temporary storage, and so, Eric, you're my only suspect."
